This article is intended to discuss the necessity and feasibility of the practice of retaining source text diversities in translation. The author argues that from a cultural point of view, the ultimate goal of translation should be the fusion and accretion of different cultures. In order to realize this goal, it is necessary for the translator to adopt the practice of retaining diversities in the source text. As for the feasibility of the practice, the author tries to demonstrate it by focusing on two aspects, which are, the retaining of linguistic and cultural diversities. In addition, the author tackles the issues concerning the limits of the practice by borrowing the traditional Chinese notion of 'harmony combined with diversity' in the field of translation, and making it serve as a guiding principle for the translator.
