Verbal irony, as a widely used figure of speech, has received considerable attention from cognitive psychologists and linguists. The traditional study of verbal irony has been shifted from rhetorical and aesthetical approaches to current cognitive and pragmatic investigation. In recent years, most of the interest has been directed at the interpretation of verbal irony. This paper explores the cognitive mechanism that directly influences the interpretation of pragmatic functions of verbal irony. It is found that the pattern of contrast versus assimilation effects documented in many psychological research literatures enables prediction of the effects of some major pragmatic functions of verbal irony, namely the degree to which a speaker is perceived as being condemning, humorous, surprised, praising and selfprotective. This pattern of perceptual contrast versus assimilation effects is realized through the contrast between the semantic meaning of an ironic comment and the way in which the real situation that is commented upon is perceived.
