Pan-English literature originated from British literature, but over the years it has formed its own characteristics such as depiction of regional life, writing of national history, and attention to cultural diversity. As an important branch of pan-English literature, Nigerian literature has devotedly represented the African ethos in the English language. Ben Okri's The Famished Road is such a masterpiece of African literature in English. The novel completes an image of Africa, discusses the African dream and manages to construct an African road in the material world, imaginary space and thirdspace. In the material world, Okri breaks the stereotypical image of Africa, which white writers created, and realistically depicts Africa before and under colonization. In the magical space, Okri reviews the African dream and its pursuit in the future in the spiritual world, dream world, and African mythology. With a hybridity of African culture and western culture, Okri manages to construct an African road while exploring a personal road in the thirdspace.
