The study of modern Chinese social history since it was rebirthed and rebounded in China three decades ago has experienced four paradigms : ' modernity ' , ' local modernity' , ' state - society ' and 'social administration' , which successively explored new dimensions for the study. The study on social history of modern China as a subject emphasised on local experiences, however, is still encountering the dilemma derived from limited theory innovations, which could not effectively answer the realistic questions we face today. Nowadays, Western theories and experiences have not been able to conceivably explain the ' China' s Development Model' , which has become a puzzle in the world. Chinese scholars so far have not proposed their own theories which could be social development in modern China. Given the widely recognised and adopted to effectively elucidate the situation, this article suggests that ' social administration' may become a main focus in the study of modern Chinese social history in the future. ' Social administra- tion' , which aims at exploring virtuous circles between social governance and development under the view of globalisation will guide us to focus on the issues around social construction and development, and shed new light on the bonds of social governance and development in modern China. It may provide im- portant historical inspirations and theoretical interpretations for China to maintain a good governance soci- ety in its sustainable development today, and contribute to forming a new research paradigm as a theoreti- cal breakthrough for the study as well.
