Dietary nutrients are essential for gastrointestinal (GI) growth and function, and nutritional support of GI growth and development is an indispensable component of piglet care. The composition of breast milk and formula affects GI harrier function and development of a competent mucosal immune system. The functional nutrients and other bioactive components of milk and formula support a microenvironment for gut protection and maturation. However, in the face of infection and other various stress, there is high incidence of enteric diseases and dysfunction in neonatal piglets and the weaners, due to the hypoplasia of GI structure and function. Therefore, it leads to much interest in understanding the role of nutrients and food components in the establishment and maintenance of a functioning GI tract, in order to improve the survival rate and the health of piglets. National Modern Agricultural Technology System (Swine Industry Technology System) has done a lot of work on the nutritional regulation technology and its application in intestinal health of piglets. Relationship between the intestinal structure and function, nutrient absorption and transport, proteomic analysis of intestinal development, intestinal injury mechanism and regulation of maternal and dietary nutrition on gut health, as well as high efficiency feeding mode integration were reviewed to promote the development and application of nutritional regulation technology in GI health in piglet industry.
