The EU enlargement in May 2004 is one of the most significant geopolitical events in Europe after the end of the Cold War.The EU accession of the Central and Eastern European countries not only helps them realize the historical aspiration to return to Europe, but exerts profound impacts on their development. It is true that the EU membership does not necessarily lead to democratic consolidation of the new member states,as illustrated by the case of Hungary. However, the EU accession has indeed promoted the economic development, enhanced the economic potentials and improved the international status of the new member states.
