This study is, based on an analysis of relevant definitions and existing researches, intended to prove the hypothesis that emotion approach coping serves as a mediator in the explanation of the relationship between optimism and positive affect and negative affect. By using the Optimism Questionnaire, the Emotion Approach Coping Scale, and the Positive Affect and Negative Affect Scale, the author tested 1035 college students to prove the hypothesis. The results show the following: emotional processing plays a completely intermediary role in the relationship between the change of optimism and positive affect and negative affect; such indicators as positive expectancy and effort contained in optimism play a direct effect on positive affect, and negative expectancy contained in optimism plays a direct effect on negative affect; and positive expectancy and negative expectancy play a direct effect on emotional expression. Optimists demonstrate a higher level of emotional processing, emotional ex- pression, and positive affect, but a lower level of negative affect than pessimists.
