Few case studies have been devoted to whether lexical teaching is necessary in TCSL intermediate listening course. This paper reports the results from a survey of 76 foreign students learning Chinese as L2 in Sun Yat--sen University in China. The findings include the following: (1) Lexical teaching is very important in such listening course. New words should be taught before the actual listening. At a higher level, the students attach more importance to lexical teaching. (2) Those important words that have been taught in other courses should still be regarded as new words in the listening course. (3) It is proper to learn 5--9 new words in a 40--minute class. (4) Auditory input and output is preferable to the visual channel.
