Informal learning refers to learning activities that are goal-directed, self-initiated, self-controlled, and self-responsible and that may take place whenever possible. Web2.0 social software features personalization, subjectivity, socialization, and diversity, thus enjoying popularity in education and other professions as well as in daily life and providing strong technical support for informal learning. In light of the key functions of social software and its impacts on learning, informal learning may take the form of online chatting, personal information retrieval, personal knowledge management, collaborative learning, and generative learning. Therefore, it is argued that the use of social software allows quick access to online information, information classification, storage and processing, personal knowledge management, information exchange and sharing, transformation of information into knowledge, and formation of virtual community of practice.
