The introduction of Natural Burial in 1993 and the proposed reintroduction of grave reuse by Government are set to have a profound impact on the landscape of the dead. Cemeteries have been historically underfunded and as a direct consequence many have become neglected and undervalued. The rapid growth in natural burial is in part a direct response to growing public concern regarding the uncared for appearance of UK cemeteries. This growth may also be attributed to diminishing availability of traditional burial space in many UK cities, Whilst natural burial continues to develop and evolve the reintroduction of grave reuse may yet save cemeteries from becoming abandoned spaces. This article will explore the development of natural burial and grave re-use and their potential to breathe new life into the landscapes of the dead. The article will draw on research which is currently being carried at the University of Sheffield, in the Departments of Landscape and Sociological Studies
