This paper explores the translation of fiction in terms of coherence and proposes the concepts of unmarked coherence and marked coherence to describe the gains and losses in translation. It argues that the surface disconnectedness in literary works tends to be poetically motivated and should be viewed as a case of marked coherence rather than something ungrammatical, illogicall or improper. It is not caused by different expressive conventions or even different language systems. Once this surface disconnectedness is reorganized as a well_connected expression, the marked coherence becomes an unmarked one, the poetic value of the original concerned is bound to be ruined.
