摘要本文回顾了英美公共图书馆在一个半世纪的发展历程中对自身使命的探索;它将整个过程划分为以下阶段:在“图书馆信仰”中产生,在经验主义考察中走向理性,在职业乐观主义背景下扩张,在功能设计中优化,在社会影响力驱动下巩固;总结了图书馆职业在回答“公共图书馆的使命究竟是什么”的问题时的几度彷徨和迷失;指出在任何时候,公共图书馆对自身使命的认识都可能存在局限,重要的是,公共图书馆不被自己的局限捆住手脚,失去探索的能力。 This paper reviews the development process of one and a half centuries of public libraries of British and U. S that is divided into the following stages- the emergence in the library belief, face the rational cognition in the empiricism investigation , the expansion under the background of occupational optimism, the optimization in function design, the consolidation by driving power of the social influence, the dither and lost in answer to the question what is the mission of the public library is summarized; in any time, the understanding of public library to the mission may have the limitations. It is important that the public library is not at a standstill by the limitations and can not lose the ability of the exploration.
