摘要
广学会是近代来华传教士设立的规模最大的出版机构,翻译出版了大量的西学书籍。在长达七十年的时间内,广学会作为赞助者有力推动了翻译出版活动的开展,在中国社会产生了广泛的影响。为了争取中国上层社会的支持并迎合他们的需要,广学会初期的翻译内容以历史、地理等人文社会科学知识为主。民国后,随着形势的转变,宗教类书籍的翻译出版逐渐成为绝对主导。广学会的活动轨迹充分体现了赞助者在翻译出版中的作用,借助安德烈·勒菲弗尔(AndréLefevere)关于赞助者的定义及其操控理论(manipulation theory),我们不仅可以加深对广学会赞助者本质的理解,还可以透视其不同时期翻译出版活动的内在理据。
The Christian Literature Society for China(1887-1956)was the largest publishing house built by missionaries in modern China.The large number of books translated and published by this Society brought great influence in its seventy years of existence.In order to win the support of upper class in China,the Society translated and published many Western books in history,geography and social sciences.After the collapse of the Qing dynasty,religious books gained the dominant position in its publications.The publication track of the Christian Literature Society for China has fully reflected the role of patron in translation and publication activities.The manipulation theory proposed by AndréLefevere has shown the impact of patron on translation activities,helping to deepen our understanding of the Christian Literature Society for China as a patron of translation and publication and look into its motivations in different periods of time.
