Based on the study of the distribution of intra-platform shoals and the characteristics of dolomite reservoirs in the Middle Permian Qixia Formation in the Gaoshiti–Moxi area of the Sichuan Basin,SW China, the controlling factors of reservoir development were analyzed, and the formation model of“intra-platform shoal thin-layer dolomite reservoir”was established. The Qixia Formation is a regressive cycle from bottom to top,in which the first member(Qi1 Member)develops low-energy open sea microfacies, and the second member(Qi2 Member)evolves into intra-platform shoal and inter-shoal sea with decreases in sea level. The intra-platform shoal is mainly distributed near the top of two secondary shallowing cycles of the Qi2 Member. The most important reservoir rock of the Qixia Formation is thin-layer fractured-vuggy dolomite, followed by vuggy dolomite. The semi-filled saddle dolomite is common in fracture-vug,and intercrystalline pores and residual dissolution pores combined with fractures to form the effective pore-fracture network.Based on the coupling analysis of sedimentary and diagenesis characteristics, the reservoir formation model of“pre-depositional micro-paleogeomorphology controlling shoal, sedimentary shoal controlling dolomite, penecontemporaneous dolomite benefiting preservation of pores, and late hydrothermal action effectively improving reservoir quality”was systematically established.The“first-order high zone”micro-paleogeomorphology before the deposition of the Qixia Formation controlled the development of large area of intra-platform shoals in Gaoshiti area during the deposition of the Qi2 Member.Shoal facies is the basic condition of early dolomitization, and the distribution range of intra-platform shoal and dolomite reservoir is highly consistent. The grain limestone of shoal facies is transformed by two stages of dolomitization. The penecontemporaneous dolomitization is conducive to the preservation of primary pores and secondary dissolved pores. The burial hydrothermal fluid enters the early dolomite body along the fractures associated with the Emeishan basalt event, makes it recrystallized into medium–coarse crystal dolomite. With the intercrystalline pores and the residual vugs after the hydrothermal dissolution along the fractures, the high-quality intra-platform shoal-type thin-layer dolomite reservoirs are formed. The establishment of this reservoir formation model can provide important theoretical support for the sustainable development of Permian gas reservoirs in the Sichuan Basin. 展开更多

To analyze the differences in the transport and distribution of different types of proppants and to address issues such as the short effective support of proppant and poor placement in hydraulically intersecting fractures, this study considered the combined impact of geological-engineering factors on conductivity.Using reservoir production parameters and the discrete elementmethod, multispherical proppants were constructed.Additionally,a 3D fracture model, based on the specified conditions of the L block, employed coupled(Computational Fluid Dynamics)CFD-DEM(Discrete ElementMethod)for joint simulations to quantitatively analyze the transport and placement patterns of multispherical proppants in intersecting fractures. Results indicate that turbulent kinetic energy is an intrinsic factor affecting proppant transport. Moreover, the efficiency of placement and migration distance of low-sphericity quartz sand constructed by the DEM in the main fracture are significantly reduced compared to spherical ceramic proppants, with a 27.7%decrease in the volume fraction of the fracture surface, subsequently affecting the placement concentration and damaging fracture conductivity.Compared to small-angle fractures, controlling artificial and natural fractures to expand at angles of 45°to 60°increases the effective support length by approximately 20.6%.During hydraulic fracturing of gas wells, ensuring the fracture support area and post-closure conductivity can be achieved by controlling the sphericity of proppants and adjusting the perforation direction to control the direction of artificial fractures. 展开更多

Neurodegenerative diseases cause great medical and economic burdens for both patients and society;however, the complex molecular mechanisms thereof are not yet well understood. With the development of high-coverage sequencing technology, researchers have started to notice that genomic repeat regions, previously neglected in search of disease culprits, are active contributors to multiple neurodegenerative diseases. In this review, we describe the association between repeat element variants and multiple degenerative diseases through genome-wide association studies and targeted sequencing. We discuss the identification of disease-relevant repeat element variants, further powered by the advancement of long-read sequencing technologies and their related tools, and summarize recent findings in the molecular mechanisms of repeat element variants in brain degeneration, such as those causing transcriptional silencing or RNA-mediated gain of toxic function. Furthermore, we describe how in silico predictions using innovative computational models, such as deep learning language models, could enhance and accelerate our understanding of the functional impact of repeat element variants. Finally, we discuss future directions to advance current findings for a better understanding of neurodegenerative diseases and the clinical applications of genomic repeat elements. 展开更多

This work focused on determining the physico-chemical characteristics (pH, carbon and nitrogen) and trace metal elements (TMEs) content (As, Sb, Cd, Hg, Ni, Pb, Cr, Zn) of soils in the Brazzaville city. Soil samples were taken from a depth of 0 to 20 cm using a hand auger on both banks of five tributaries of the Congo River (Djoué, Mfilou, Mfoa, Tsiémé, Djiri) that flow through the city of Brazzaville. 90 sampling points were defined, with 3 points 250 m apart on the banks and located, for each river, at three sites: upstream, midstream and downstream. Finally, 15 composite samples representative of the study area were taken. The average pH values of the water varied between 6.5 and 7.5. These pH values show that the soils studied are neutral. Total carbon content varied between 0.7% (Djiri) and 1.6% (Djoué). Total nitrogen content ranged from 0.08% (Djiri) to 0.12% (Djoué). TMEs contents varied from 0.5 to 1.8 mg/kg for Sb, from 0.5 to 2.5 mg/kg for As, from 0.1 to 0.18 mg/kg for Cd, from 4.2 to 11.3 mg/kg for Cr, from 0.07 to 0.27 mg/kg for Hg, from 0.7 to 2.4 mg/kg for Ni, from 0 to 158 mg/kg for Pb and from 16 to 105 mg/kg for Zn. The lowest TMEs levels were observed in the soils of the Djiri river, while the highest levels were observed in the soils of the Djoué and Tsiémé rivers. The ANOVA and Bonferroni test did not show significant differences in the means of the parameters measured (p > 0.05). The TMEs levels were below the accepted standards (NF U44-041), with the exception of Pb, which had high levels downstream of the Djoué. According to the pollution index values calculated using soil TME content, the soils on the banks of the Djoué river are considered polluted, while those on the banks of the Tsiémé river are moderately polluted, those on the banks of the Mfoa and Mfilou rivers are slightly polluted, and the soils on the banks of Djiri river are unpolluted. 展开更多

Changes in major climatic elements such as temperature, precipitation and wind distribution have triggered weather-related and geophysical disasters. In recent years, the globe has experienced an increased number of floods and landslide events which are said to be the most common among other natural disasters. This study examines the influence of climatic elements on the geo-hydrological disaster which occurred in Hanang district-Tanzania on 3rd December 2023. The study used the primary data collected from 182 respondents. Also, the trend analysis (1981-2023) was conducted using average rainfall from 7 meteorological stations in the study area. Annual and seasonal rainfall as well as a number of rainy days were analyzed. The calculated rainfall data were then used to compute the dimensions of the standardized precipitation anomalies (SPA) which is designated as SPA = (P − P*)/σp. Besides, the temperature was analysed to investigate its trend and trend anomaly. Also, the wind rose statistics for the annual, March to May (MAM) and October to December (OND) for the climatology period of 1991-2020 were analysed so as to examine its contribution to rainfall distribution in Hanang district. The examination of annual rainfall data indicates an upward trend in precipitation levels, accompanied by notable variability in rainfall patterns, including seasonal anomalies and deviations from historical averages. The combination of elevated rainfall, anomalies in rainfall patterns, and potentially unfavourable terrain characteristics may have contributed to devastated geo-hydrological disaster risk. However, future research is recommended that could focus on integrating rainfall and temperature data with comprehensive geo-hydrological susceptibility assessments, considering factors such as terrain stability, land cover and land use practices. 展开更多

Introduction: During pregnancy, the increased demand for all the nutrients required for the development of the foetus means that the maternal stock of trace elements and minerals may become unbalanced if dietary intake fails to compensate. The aim of this research is to determine the status of trace elements (calcium, copper, magnesium, selenium and zinc) in pregnant women in the city of Kisangani. Methods: We carried out an analytical cross-sectional study of non-pregnant and pregnant women living in Kisangani, from 05 October 2023 to 05 January 2024. Concentrations of trace elements in sera were analysed using an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrophotometer (ICP-MS Agilent 7700X). Statistical analysis of the data was performed using R software version 4.3.0. Results: The mean age was 26.3 ± 6.7 years;the mean copper and magnesium levels in the serum of pregnant women were 12.58 ± 1.13 micromol/l and 1.03 ± 1.03 mmol/l respectively. The medians for calcium and zinc were 1.49 mmol/l and 8.42 micromol/l. The selenium mode was 0.41 micromol/l. Variations in trace element levels in sera of pregnant women were 0.94 - 2.22 mmol/l for calcium;0.31 - 0.78 micromol/l for selenium;and 7.29 - 12.72 micromol/l for zinc;11.04 - 14.99 micromol/l for copper, and 0.082 - 1.05 mmol/l for magnesium. Conclusion: Serum trace element concentrations in pregnant women were lower than those observed in non-pregnant women. Trace element reserves in pregnant women depended on their nutrient status prior to pregnancy, hence, there was an urgent need for trace element balance prior to pregnancy. 展开更多

Objective: To compare the stress distribution in the periodontal ligament under different orthodontic forces during canine distalization using long-arm brackets, and to determine the optimal force value for this device in orthodontic treatment. Methods: A finite element model was constructed after extracting the mandibular first premolar, and a long-arm bracket with a traction height of 6 mm was placed on the labial side of the mandibular canine. Three working conditions of 50 g, 100 g, and 150 g were simulated, and the magnitude and distribution of von Mises stress in the periodontal ligament were compared for each condition. Results: The maximum von Mises stress in the periodontal ligament was 0.013281 MPa in the 50 g condition, 0.02536 MPa in the 100 g condition, and 0.035549 MPa in the 150 g condition. As the orthodontic force increased, the stress distribution area in the periodontal ligament also expanded. Conclusion: A 100 g orthodontic force is the most suitable when using long-arm brackets, providing a relatively uniform stress distribution in the periodontal ligament and keeping the stress within a reasonable range. 展开更多

Fractional-order time-delay differential equations can describe many complex physical phenomena with memory or delay effects, which are widely used in the fields of cell biology, control systems, signal processing, etc. Therefore, it is of great significance to study fractional-order time-delay differential equations. In this paper, we discuss a finite volume element method for a class of fractional-order neutral time-delay differential equations. By introducing an intermediate variable, the fourth-order problem is transformed into a system of equations consisting of two second-order partial differential equations. The L1 formula is used to approximate the time fractional order derivative terms, and the finite volume element method is used in space. A fully discrete format of the equations is established, and we prove the existence, uniqueness, convergence and stability of the solution. Finally, the validity of the format is verified by numerical examples. 展开更多

In this article, a finite volume element algorithm is presented and discussed for the numerical solutions of a time-fractional nonlinear fourth-order diffusion equation with time delay. By choosing the second-order spatial derivative of the original unknown as an additional variable, the fourth-order problem is transformed into a second-order system. Then the fully discrete finite volume element scheme is formulated by using L1approximation for temporal Caputo derivative and finite volume element method in spatial direction. The unique solvability and stable result of the proposed scheme are proved. A priori estimate of L2-norm with optimal order of convergence O(h2+τ2−α)where τand hare time step length and space mesh parameter, respectively, is obtained. The efficiency of the scheme is supported by some numerical experiments. 展开更多

Avian genomes exhibit compact organization and remarkable chromosomal stability. However, the extent and mechanisms by which structural variation in avian genomes differ from those in other vertebrate lineages are poorly explored. This study generated a diploid genome assembly for the golden pheasant(Chrysolophus pictus),a species distinguished by the vibrant plumage of males. Each haploid genome assembly included complete chromosomalmodels, incorporatingall microchromosomes.Analysis revealed extensive tandem amplification of immune-related genes across the smallest microchromosomes(dot chromosomes),with an average copy number of 54.Structural variation between the haploid genomes was primarily shaped by large insertions and deletions(indels),with minimal contributions from inversions or duplications.Approximately 28%of these large indels were associated with recent insertions of transposable elements, despite their typically low activity in bird genomes.Evidence for significant effects of transposable elements on gene expression was minimal.Evolutionary strata on the sex chromosomes were identified, along with a drastic rearrangement of the W chromosome. These analyses of the high-quality diploid genome of the golden pheasant provide valuable insights into the evolutionary patterns of structural variation in avian genomes. 展开更多

Neutron-induced gamma-ray imaging is a spectroscopic technique that uses characteristic gamma rays to infer the elemental distribution of an object.Currently, this technique requires the use of large facilities to supply a high neutron flux and a time-consuming detection procedure involving direct collimating measurements. In this study,a new method based on low neutron flux was proposed.A single-pixel gamma-ray detector combined with random pattern gamma-ray masks was used to measure the characteristic gamma rays emitted from the sample.Images of the elemental distribution in the sample, comprising 30×30 pixels, were reconstructed using the maximum-likelihood expectation-maximization algorithm. The results demonstrate that the elemental imaging of the sample can be accurately determined using this method. The proposed approach, which eliminates the need for high neutron flux and scanning measurements, can be used for in-field imaging applications. 展开更多

Working toward an efficient duration and timeline for the preconstruction phase should be one of the main objectives for project owners.Failing to plan for and coordinate preconstruction decisions in order to control preconstruction duration and manage time variances can lead to financial insecurities, incomplete contract documents, permitting issues, and unrealistic schedules and resource allocation during this phase. To minimize time variances and ensure a productive decision-making process, project owners should be familiar with critical elements in a project that cause variances in the preconstruction phase timeline. In this study, the impacts of eleven critical preconstruction elements on time variances were analyzed. These eleven preconstruction elements are considered critical in how they impact time variances during the preconstruction phase. They were determined to be critical based either on significantly impacting time variance during the preconstruction phase or believed to be critical from findings from previous studies, however, the findings from this study showed no significant impact on the time variances. In most previous studies focusing on the elements impacting project schedules, data were collected by surveying construction professionals. In this study, objective and quantitative data related to project preconstruction elements were used as opposed to self-reported data.Using the results of this study, project owners and stakeholders will be able to evaluate the critical preconstruction elements impacting the timing of their projects and prioritize decisions related to the critical elements early on during the preconstruction phase. 展开更多

This study investigates the distribution, geochemical behavior, and potential anthropogenic influences of rare earth elements(REEs)in the surface sediments of Qinghai Lake, the largest saline lake in China.A total of 36 surface sediment samples were analyzed for REE concentrations with a combination of self-organizing maps(SOM)and positive matrix factorization(PMF).Results indicate distinct enrichment patterns, with light REEs(LREEs)exhibiting higher concentrations than heavy REEs(HREEs),reflecting natural abundances and geochemical behaviors. The minimum value was found in Lu as low as 0.091 mg/kg,and the maximum concentration was exhibited in Ce at 78.877 mg/kg.Geoaccumulation index(I_(geo))analysis reveals minor to moderate enrichment of specific REEs of Sm and Nd,suggesting possible localized anthropogenic inputs, particularly near river mouths.Spatial analysis using inverse distance weighting(IDW)and self-organizing maps(SOM)highlights significant correlations between REE distributions and riverine inputs, underscoring fluvial transport's role in sedimentary REE dynamics.PMF identifies mixed natural and anthropogenic sources, with agricultural and industrial activities contributing to elevated REE levels in sediment. These findings provide critical insights into the geochemical behavior of REEs in saline lake systems and off er a foundation for pollution control and sustainable resource management in sensitive environments like Qinghai Lake. 展开更多

Due to their superior properties, the interest in nanostructures is increasing today in engineering. This study presents a new two-noded curved finite element for analyzing the in-plane static behaviors of curved nanobeams. Opposite to traditional curved finite elements developed by using approximate interpolation functions, the proposed curved finite element is developed by using exact analytical solutions. Although this approach was first introduced for analyzing the mechanical behaviors of macro-scale curved beams by adopting the local theory of elasticity, the exact analytical expressions used in this study were obtained from the solutions of governing equations that were expressed via the differential form of the nonlocal theory of elasticity. Therefore, the effects of shear strain and axial extension included in the analytical formulation are also inherited by the curved finite element developed here. The rigidity matrix and the consistent force vector are developed for a circular finite element. To demonstrate the applicability of the method, static analyses of various curved nanobeams subjected to different boundary conditions and loading scenarios are performed, and the obtained results are compared with the exact analytical ones. The presented study provides an accurate and low computational cost method for researchers to investigate the in-plane static behavior of curved nanobeams. 展开更多

Background Mobile element variants(MEVs)have a significant and complex impact on genomic diversity and phe-notypic traits. However, the quantity, distribution, and relationship with gene expression and complex traits of MEVs in the pig genome remain poorly understood. Results We constructed the most comprehensive porcine MEV library based on high-depth whole genome sequencing(WGS)data from 747 pigs across 59 breeds worldwide. This database identified a total of 147,993 poly-morphic MEVs,including 121,099 short interspersed nuclear elements(SINEs),26,053 long interspersed nuclear elements(LINEs),802 long terminal repeats(LTRs),and 39 other transposons, among which 54%are newly discovered. We found that MEVs are unevenly distributed across the genome and are strongly influenced by negative selec-tion effects.Importantly,we identified 514,530,and 584 candidate MEVs associated with population differentiation, domestication, and breed formation, respectively. For example,a significantly differentiated MEV is located in the ATRX intron between Asian and European pigs, whereas ATRX is also differentially expressed between Asian and European pigs in muscle tissue. In addition,we identified 4,169 expressed MEVs(eMEVs)significantly associated with gene expression and 6,914 splicing MEVs(sMEVs)associated with gene splicing based on RNA-seq data from 266 porcine liver tissues. These eMEVs and sMEVs explain 6.24%and 9.47%,respectively,of the observed cis-heritability and high-light the important role of MEVs in the regulation of gene expression. Finally,we provide a high-quality SNP–MEV reference haplotype panel to impute MEV genotypes from genome-wide SNPs.Notably,we identified a candidate MEV significantly associated with total teat number, demonstrating the functionality of this reference panel. Conclusions The present investigation demonstrated the importance of MEVs in pigs in terms of population diversity, gene expression and phenotypic traits, which may provide useful resources and theoretical support for pig genetics and breeding. 展开更多

Wellbore breakout is one of the critical issues in drilling due to the fact that the related problems result in additional costs and impact the drilling scheme severely. However, the majority of such wellbore breakout analyses were based on continuum mechanics. In addition to failure in intact rocks, wellbore breakouts can also be initiated along natural discontinuities,e.g.weak planes and fractures.Furthermore, the conventional models in wellbore breakouts with uniform distribution fractures could not reflect the real drilling situation. This paper presents a fully coupled hydro-mechanical model of the SB-X well in the Tarim Basin,China for evaluating wellbore breakouts in heavily fractured rocks under anisotropic stress states using the distinct element method(DEM)and the discrete fracture network(DFN).The developed model was validated against caliper log measurement, and its stability study was carried out by stress and displacement analyses.A parametric study was performed to investigate the effects of the characteristics of fracture distribution(orientation and length)on borehole stability by sensitivity studies.Simulation results demonstrate that the increase of the standard deviation of orientation when the fracture direction aligns parallel or perpendicular to the principal stress direction aggravates borehole instability. Moreover,an elevation in the average fracture length causes the borehole failure to change from the direction of the minimum in-situ horizontal principal stress(i.e.the direction of wellbore breakouts)towards alternative directions, ultimately leading to the whole wellbore failure. These findings provide theoretical insights for predicting wellbore breakouts in heavily fractured rocks. 展开更多
