The spontaneous bursts of electrical activity in the developing auditory system are derived from the periodic release of adenosine triphosphate(ATP)by supporting cells in the Kölliker’s organ. However, the mechanisms responsible for initiating spontaneous ATP release have not been determined. Our previous study revealed that telomerase reverse transcriptase(TERT)is expressed in the basilar membrane during the first postnatal week. Its role in cochlear development remains unclear. In this study,we investigated the expression and role of TERT in postnatal cochlea supporting cells. Our results revealed that in postnatal cochlear Kölliker’s organ supporting cells,TERT shifts from the nucleus into the cytoplasm over time.We found that the TERT translocation tendency in postnatal cochlear supporting cells in vitro coincided with that observed in vivo.Further analysis showed that TERT in the cytoplasm was mainly located in mitochondria in the absence of oxidative stress or apoptosis, suggesting that TERT in mitochondria plays roles other than antioxidant or anti-apoptotic functions. We observed increased ATP synthesis, release and activation of purine signaling systems in supporting cells during the first 10 postnatal days. The phenomenon that TERT translocation coincided with changes in ATP synthesis, release and activation of the purine signaling system in postnatal cochlear supporting cells suggested that TERT may be involved in regulating ATP release and activation of the purine signaling system. Our study provides a new research direction for exploring the spontaneous electrical activity of the cochlea during the early postnatal period. 展开更多

The inner ear sensory epithelium consists of two major types of cells:hair cells(HCs)and supporting cells(SCs).Critical functions of HCs in the perception of mechanical stimulation and mechanosensory transduction have long been elucidated.SCs are indispensable components of the sensory epithelia, and they maintain the structural integrity and ionic environment of the inner ear.Once delicate inner ear epithelia sustain injuries(for example, due to ototoxic drugs or noise exposure),SCs respond immediately to serve as repairers of the epithelium and as adapters to become HC progenitors, aiming at morphological and functional recovery of the inner ear. This regenerative process is extensive in non-mammals,but is limited in the mammalian inner ear, especially in the mature cochlea. This review aimed to discuss the important roles of SCs in the repair of the mammalian inner ear. 展开更多

Lightweight thin-walled structures with lattice infill are widely desired in satellite for their high stiffness-to-weight ratio and superior buckling strength resulting fromthe sandwich effect.Such structures can be fabricated bymetallic additive manufacturing technique, such as selective laser melting(SLM).However, the maximum dimensions of actual structures are usually in a sub-meter scale, which results in restrictions on their appliance in aerospace and other fields. In this work,a meter-scale thin-walled structure with lattice infill is designed for the fuel tank supporting component of the satellite by integrating a self-supporting lattice into the thickness optimization of the thin-wall.The designed structure is fabricated by SLM of AlSi10Mg and cold metal transfer welding technique.Quasi-static mechanical tests and vibration tests are both conducted to verify the mechanical strength of the designed large-scale lattice thin-walled structure. The experimental results indicate that themeter-scale thin-walled structure with lattice infill could meet the dimension and lightweight requirements of most spacecrafts. 展开更多

Aiming to mitigate the aerodynamic lift force imbalance between pantograph strips, which exacerbates wear and affects the current collection performance of the pantograph-catenary system,a study has been conducted to support the beam deflector optimization using a combination of experimental measurements and computational fluid dynamics(CFD)simulations. The results demonstrate that the size, position, and installation orientation of the wind deflectors significantly influence the amount of force compensation. They also indicate that the front strip deflectors should be installed downwards and the rear strip deflectors upwards, thereby forming a“π”shape. Moreover, the lift force compensation provided by the wind deflectors increases with the size of the deflector.Alternative wind compensation strategies, such as control circuits, are also discussed, putting emphasis on the pros and cons of various pantograph types and wind compensation approaches. 展开更多

Open networks and heterogeneous services in the Internet of Vehicles(IoV)can lead to security and privacy challenges. One key requirement for such systems is the preservation of user privacy, ensuring a seamless experience in driving, navigation, and communication. These privacy needs are influenced by various factors, such as data collected at different intervals, trip durations, and user interactions. To address this, the paper proposes a Support Vector Machine(SVM)model designed to process large amounts of aggregated data and recommend privacy preserving measures. The model analyzes data based on user demands and interactions with service providers or neighboring infrastructure. It aims to minimize privacy risks while ensuring service continuity and sustainability. The SVMmodel helps validate the system’s reliability by creating a hyperplane that distinguishes between maximum and minimum privacy recommendations. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed SVM model in enhancing both privacy and service performance. 展开更多

Catalyst–support interaction plays a crucial role in improving the catalytic activity of oxygen evolution reaction(OER).Here we modulate the catalyst–support interaction in polyaniline-supported Ni_(3)Fe oxide(Ni_(3)Fe oxide/PANI)with a robust hetero-interface,which significantly improves oxygen evolution activities with an overpotential of 270 mV at 10 mA cm^(-2)and specific activity of 2.08 mA cm_(ECSA)^(-2)at overpotential of 300 mV,3.84-fold that of Ni_(3)Fe oxide. It is revealed that the catalyst–support interaction between Ni_(3)Fe oxide and PANI support enhances the Ni–O covalency via the interfacial Ni–N bond, thus promoting the charge and mass transfer on Ni_(3)Fe oxide.Considering the excellent activity and stability, rechargeable Zn-air batteries with optimum Ni_(3)Fe oxide/PANI are assembled, delivering a low charge voltage of 1.95 V to cycle for 400 h at 10 mA cm^(-2).The regulation of the effect of catalyst–support interaction on catalytic activity provides new possibilities for the future design of highly efficient OER catalysts. 展开更多

The preferential oxidation of CO(CO-PROX)reaction is a cost-effective method for eliminating trace amounts of CO from the fuel H2.Pt-based catalysts have been extensively studied for COPROX,with their activity influenced by the morphology of the support.Hydrothermal synthesis was employed to produce different morphologies ofγ-Al_(2)O_(3):flower-likeγ-Al_(2)O_(3)(f)exposing(110)crystal faces,sheet-likeγ-Al_(2)O_(3)(s)revealing(100)crystal faces, and rod-likeγ-Al_(2)O_(3)(r)displaying(111)crystal faces, followed by loading PtCo nanoparticles. The exposed crystal faces of the support impact the alloying degree of the PtCo nanoparticles, and an increase in the alloying degree correlates with enhanced catalyst reactivity.Pt_(3)Co intermetallic compounds were identified onγ-Al_(2)O_(3)(f)exposing(110)crystal faces, and PtCo/γ-Al_(2)O_(3)(f)showed high catalytic activity in the CO-PROX reaction, achieving 100%CO conversion across a broad temperature range of 50−225°C.In contrast, only partial alloying of PtCo was observed onγ-Al_(2)O_(3)(s).Furthermore,no alloying between Pt and Co occurred in PtCo/γ-Al_(2)O_(3)(r),resulting in a reaction rate at 50°C that was merely 11%of that of PtCo/γ-Al_(2)O_(3)(f).The formation of Pt3Co intermetallic compounds led to a more oxidized state of Pt,which significantly diminished the adsorption of CO on Pt and augmented the active oxygen species, thereby facilitating the selective oxidation of CO. 展开更多

Accurately estimating the State of Health(SOH)and Remaining Useful Life(RUL)of lithium-ion batteries(LIBs)is crucial for the continuous and stable operation of battery management systems. However, due to the complex internal chemical systems of LIBs and the nonlinear degradation of their performance, direct measurement of SOH and RUL is challenging. To address these issues, the Twin Support Vector Machine(TWSVM)method is proposed to predict SOH and RUL.Initially, the constant current charging time of the lithium battery is extracted as a health indicator(HI),decomposed using Variational Modal Decomposition(VMD),and feature correlations are computed using Importance of Random Forest Features(RF)to maximize the extraction of critical factors influencing battery performance degradation.Furthermore,to enhance the global search capability of the Convolution Optimization Algorithm(COA),improvements are made using Good Point Set theory and the Differential Evolution method. The Improved Convolution Optimization Algorithm(ICOA)is employed to optimize TWSVM parameters for constructing SOH and RUL prediction models. Finally, the proposed models are validated using NASA and CALCE lithium-ion battery datasets.Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed models achieve an RMSE not exceeding 0.007 and an MAPE not exceeding 0.0082 for SOH and RUL prediction, with a relative error in RUL prediction within the range of[-1.8%,2%].Compared to other models, the proposed model not only exhibits superior fitting capability but also demonstrates robust performance. 展开更多

Background: Clinical decision support tools provide suggestions to support healthcare providers and clinicians, as they attend to patients. Clinicians use these tools to rapidly consult the evidence at the point of care, a practice which has been found to reduce the time patients spend in hospitals, promote the quality of care and improve healthcare outcomes. Such tools include Medscape, VisualDx, Clinical Key, DynaMed, BMJ Best Practice and UpToDate. However, use of such tools has not yet been fully embraced in low-resource settings such as Uganda. Objective: This paper intends to collate data on the use and uptake of one such tool, UpToDate, which was provided at no cost to five medical schools in Uganda. Methods: Free access to UpToDate was granted through the IP addresses of five medical schools in Uganda in collaboration with Better Evidence at The Global Health Delivery Project at Harvard and Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Wolters Kluwer Health. Following the donation, medical librarians in the respective institutions conducted training sessions and created awareness of the tool. Usage data was aggregated, based on logins and content views, presented and analyzed using Excel tables and graphs. Results: The data shows similar trends in increased usage over the period of August 2022 to August 2023 across the five medical schools. The most common topics viewed, mode of access (using either the computer or the mobile app), total usage by institution, ratio of uses to eligible users by institution and ratio of uses to students by institution are shared. Conclusion: The study revealed that the tool was used by various user categories across the institutions with similar steady improved usage over the year. These results can inform the librarians as they encourage their respective institutions to continue using the tool to support uptake of point-of-care tools in clinical practice. 展开更多

This study presents an AI-driven Spatial Decision Support System (SDSS) aimed at transforming groundwater suitability assessments for domestic and irrigation uses in Visakhapatnam District, Andhra Pradesh, India. By employing advanced remote sensing, GIS, and machine learning techniques, groundwater quality data from 50 monitoring wells, sourced from the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), was meticulously analysed. Key parameters, including pH, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, and major ion concentrations, were evaluated against World Health Organization (WHO) standards to determine domestic suitability. For irrigation, advanced metrics such as Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR), Kelly’s Ratio, Residual Sodium Carbonate (RSC), and percentage sodium (% Na) were utilized to assess water quality. The integration of GIS for spatial mapping and AI models for predictive analytics allows for a comprehensive visualization of groundwater quality distribution across the district. Additionally, the irrigation water quality was evaluated using the USA Salinity Laboratory diagram, providing essential insights for effective agricultural water management. This innovative SDSS framework promises to significantly enhance groundwater resource management, fostering sustainable practices for both domestic use and agriculture in the region. 展开更多

Rockbursts, which mainly affect mining roadways, are dynamic disasters arising from the surrounding rock under high stress. Understanding the interaction between supports and the surrounding rock is necessary for effective rockburst control. In this study, the squeezing behavior of the surrounding rock is analyzed in rockburst roadways, and a mechanical model of rockbursts is established considering the dynamic support stress, thus deriving formulas and providing characteristic curves for describing the interaction between the support and surrounding rock. Design principles and parameters of supports for rockburst control are proposed. The results show that only when the geostress magnitude exceeds a critical value can it drive the formation of rockburst conditions. The main factors influencing the convergence response and rockburst occurrence around roadways are geostress, rock brittleness, uniaxial compressive strength, and roadway excavation size. Roadway support devices can play a role in controlling rockburst by suppressing the squeezing evolution of the surrounding rock towards instability points of rockburst. Further, the higher the strength and the longer the impact stroke of support devices with constant resistance, the more easily multiple balance points can be formed with the surrounding rock to control rockburst occurrence. Supports with long impact stroke allow adaptation to varying geostress levels around the roadway, aiding in rockburst control. The results offer a quantitative method for designing support systems for rockburst-prone roadways. The design criterion of supports is determined by the intersection between the convergence curve of the surrounding rock and the squeezing deformation curve of the support devices. 展开更多

Decision support systems(DSS)based on physically based numerical models are standard tools used by water services and utilities. However, few DSS based on holistic approaches combining distributed hydrological, hydraulic, and hydrogeological models are operationally exploited. This holistic approach was adopted for the development of the AquaVar DSS,used for water resource management in the French Mediterranean Var watershed. The year 2019 marked the initial use of the DSS in its operational environment.Over the next 5 years, multiple hydrological events allowed to test the performance of the DSS.The results show that the tool is capable of simulating peak flows associated with two extreme rainfall events(storms Alex and Aline). For a moderate flood, the real-time functionality was able to simulate forecast discharges 26 h before the flood peak, with a maximum local error of 30%.Finally,simulations for the drought period 2022-2023 highlighted the essential need for DSS to evolve in line with changing climatic conditions, which give rise to unprecedented hydrological processes. The lessons learned from these first 5 years of AquaVar use under operational conditions are synthesized, addressing various topics such as DSS modularity, evolution, data positioning, technology, and governance. 展开更多
