Abdulrazak Gurnah’s novel Pilgrims Way demonstrates the performative attributes of racial identity in the post-colonial era by depicting the protagonist Daud’s experience of struggling to survive in the gap between different races and cultures.Taking the demise and reconstruction of“pilgrimage”as a clue, the novel portrays the invisible barriers constructed by different ethnic groups, outlines the racial performance strategies of marginalized people to challenge racial norms, and finally constructs an ideal mode of racial interaction through the positive ethical choices of the characters.Gurnah reveals the racial prejudice that lies beneath the progressive veneer of civilization in modern society, criticizes the latent racial violence of black nationalism, and tries to use the racial performance and deconstruction of racial identity in an attempt to dismantle the authority of the narrative of empire,so as to realize the quest for the ethical value of equal co-existence of human beings as well as a new imagining of the world of mobility.
