In the late 17th century, with the expansion of Anglo-Indian cotton trade, calico from India was all the rage in Britain, its popularity triggered a wave of protectionism in British society. In order to protect the domestic industries and national interests, the British government issued two bans on the import of calico in 1699 and 1720,famously known as the Calico Acts.Studies of it in western historiography has experienced a slow shift and a slow broadening of perspective.Early studies were integrated into the economic and social history perspective, focusing on the two main issues of protectionism and the cotton trade, with the England wool industry and the British East India Company being the main protagonists. In the late 20th century, under the influence of the new historiography trend, interdisciplinary research filled the deficiency of earlier research, with studies in consumer history explaining the popularity of the Indian calico in Britain, and studies in social history examining the protectionist movement in Britain. With the rise of the global view of history, historians in the 21st century have placed the Calico Acts in a global perspective, and related research has gradually broken through the scope of nation-state,with the smuggling trade, the global trade network, and the British imperial system becoming new directions for research.
