摘要
妈祖始于女巫,终于女神。她的女巫身份英译为“shamaness”,并不是很恰当。原因有二:首先,作为宗教的巫和萨满并不等同c其次,在中国的史籍中,本来是以“巫”来解释“shaman”的。而且,用“wu”“wu shaman”或“wu-shaman”的译法,要比“shaman”合适,因为“wu”“wu shaman”或“wu-shaman”是具有中国特色的术语,能更加准确无误地传播中华文化。
Mazu,originally a“wu”,ends up as a Goddess.She is a“巫”in Chinese while a“shamaness”in English.After sorting out the opinions both of agreeing with and of opposing this translation from the Chinese and English literature,the author of this paper has drawn a conclusion that the translation of“wu”into shamaness in Mazu’s case is not a proper one.The reasons are as follows:first,“wu”and“shaman”are not the same;second,in Chinese history,the“wu”has been taken as the primary reference to understand shamanism.And“wu”,“wu shaman”or“wu-shaman”is a better translation than“shaman”in the case of Mazu because of their Chinese characteristics,by which Chinese culture can spread throughout the world more effectively and accurately.
