The rise of Ming-Qing guilds stands out as one of the most notable milestones in the history of Chinese commerce and merchants, but quantitative analyses of Ming-Qing guilds are still rare. Employing a unique cross-section county level dataset, this paper studies the effect of local lineage on the rise of Ming-Qing guilds during 1368-1840. We find that counties where lineage organizations are more widespread have a higher probability of the rise of guilds, and this result remains robust after including a set of control variables such as population density, land tax per capita, social unrest, transportation and other county characteristics. However, the positive effect of local lineage on the rise of Ming-Qing guilds tends to be weakened by local keju culture. Additionally, we find that the competition among local lineage organizations plays a positive role in the rise of Ming-Qing guilds.
