With painstaking researches into Cao Xueqin' s family background and social relations, Zhou Ruchang put forward his theories and formed a unique system on the basis of looking into Cao' s descriptions of characters and inci- dents in the novel and their allusions to historical facts in Qing Dynasty. A considerable number of Zhou' s findings that concern A Dream in Red Mansions are plausible; however, indiscriminately summarizing that all novelistic characters al- lude to contemporary monarchs and authorities is farfetched. Regarding Prince Gong' s Mansion as the prototype of the Grand View Garden is a display of Zhou's out-of-context interpretation and it is very likely that he had taken hearsay or rumors for facts. This article tries to dispel misinterpretations and clarify the actual situations by analyzing the grounds on which Zhou built his arguments, the historical evolution of Prince Gong' s Mansion and a series of interpretations. It will hopefully have a positive impact on the development of researches on A Dream in Red Mansions.
