Wuchidao is an important traffic path from Sichuan basin to Xinanyi area and an important route from Southwest China to Southeast Asia and South Asia in ancient times. How- ever, no thorough research or study has ever been made on the opening of Wuchidao. Most scholars agree that Wuchidao was opened in the late period of the Warring States or Qin dynasty, which turns out to be a misunderstanding of the relating historical literature documents. The careful research of Shiji and Hanshu, together with the archaeological data of southwest China in recent years, reveals that Wuchidao is the most important transport corridor between the ancient Shu kingdom and Xinanyi in the pre-Qin period. Wuchidao was not opened in the late period of the Warring States or the Qin dynasty but opened by Wuding of the ancient Shu kingdom in the Shang dynasty.
