The changes in family patterns are an important driving force and perspective of social development. The surge in the number of mother-only families since the 1960s has triggered a large-scale wave of moral criticism, increasingly conservative political atmosphere and tight welfare policies.Changes in the economic position of gender, together with the evolution of marriage and sexual ideas, single mothers'own point of views on the value of marriage and fertility, and the dual role of government public policy, have been working together to promote the increase of mother-only families.Considering the ratio and extent of poverty, the poor black single-mother families is especially noteworthy. The specific factors for the high ratio of single-mother families in American black families are the acceptance of matriarchal family pattern and a shortage of marriageable male in black communities.
