The descriptive aspect of geology as well as the qualitative information from basic geological (field) work and investigations force the community of mathematical geology inevitably to deal with such qualitative variables as rock types, sedimental phases, ore types etc. when modelling geological phenomena connected with them. In the last years geostatistical methods are widely used to model geological spatial phenomena. But if the geological phenomenon under study is described by a set of discrete states, geostatistical methods are only employable under certain restrictions. In comparision with that, Markov chain models are more appropriate for discrete states. The present paper intends to discuss some relations between these models, when applying them to the analysis of geological spatial phenomena characterized by qualitative variables.
