Based on the jade cicadas as burial goods put inside the mouth of deceased people of the Han dynasty, this paper discusses their charcteristics, distribution and periodization and argues that this special burial artifact may have come from the Yangzi and Huai river valley and then moved to the Guanzhong area when the Western Han dynasty built its capital in Xi' an.
