Central counterparts were originally introduced at derivatives markets. Due to recent developments on the exchange landscape and the globalization of the whole industry, CCPs have become more and more prominent in Europe. This paper introduces the recent developments in CCPs and European clearing and settlement as well as the supervisory reaction from regulation authorities .
