On the Realm and Condition of Artistry

摘要 在中国文艺学领域,“意境”与“境界”常被混为一谈,而实际上是判然有别的。“意境”强调的是主客化一,情景交融,“境界”注重的则是作家、艺术家凝铸于作品中的关于现实、人生、宇宙的主体性体悟与沉思,即诗性精神空间;“意境”是一个浑然整体概念,“境界”是一个深度层级概念;“意境”更适于论及托物言志或借景抒情之类诗作,而“境界”则不仅可用之于分析各类诗歌,亦可用之于分析小说、散文、戏剧以及书法、绘画、音乐等各类艺术作品,以及诗人、作家、艺术家的人格层次等。文学艺术中的境界,由低到高,大致上可分为自然、功利、道德、宇宙四个层级,中外历史上那些一流文学名著,所达到的正是最高品级的宇宙境界。 Often confused in China's literary theories though, the artistic conception(yijing), and the realm and condition of artistry(jingjie ), as a matter of fact, are different from each other. While the former lays stress upon the unification of subject with the object and the infiltration of emotions into the scenery, the latter, upon the subjective appreciation and meditation of reality, life and the universe of the author and/or the artist embodied in their works of art, viz. the poetic spiritual space; while the former is a concept of a ingle integrated mass, the latter, that of the hierarchy in the depth; while the former is the more liable to appreciate those poems with which the poet expresses his/her will metaphorically or his/her feelings through the picturing of the scenery, the latter, to analyze not only different poems, but also various kinds of works of art such as fiction, prose, drama, calligraphy, painting, music as well as the characters and moral cultivation of the poets, authors, and artists. The realm and condition of artistry in literature can largely be divided into four levels: nature, utility, moral and the universe. And what the literary masterpieces in world history have attained is just that of the universe.
