The“issues vs. isms”debate during the May Fourth period involved a vital issue of the times: should Chinese society be changed little by little, or once as a whole? The debate had some aspects that are not reflected in existing studies. At the time, the protagonists of a wholesale or fundamental approach were numerous, but many of them were not radical, and some of them were against Marxism. To many, the wholesale and the piecemeal approaches did not contradict each other; rather, they were mutually supplementary. And a“fundamental solution”did not necessarily mean a revolution, although revolution could be a first step toward a fundamental transformation.
