OBJECTIVE To prevent medical staff and patients from infection during operation. METHODS We (collected) and analyzed the information of gloves puncture from 452 surgeons and nurses in the time from Jul to Dec 2002. RESULTS Gloves puncture happened in 48 cases of 452 persons (10.6%), including surgeons (12.5%), first assistants (11.9%), and nurses (13.1%), of which, the rate was significantly higher than the second (assistants) (3.1%) (P<0.05). The rate was significantly higher in the operations lasting longer than 3 hours (15.3%) than those finished in 3 hours (7.2%) (P<0.05). The gloves puncture was always found after (operations,) so the reason was not yet known. The gloves puncture happened in the right hand (81.5%) more (than) in the left one (47.8%) (P<0.05), and always happened in the palm side, especially in thumb, (forefinger) and middle finger. CONCLUSIONS To prevent cross infection, the medical staff should change gloves immediately when gloves puncture is found and when the operations last more than 3 hours.
