Since the later period of the Middle Ages, private residential conditions in England had experienced a series of changes, especially in housing dimension, room arrangement and housing investment. They all reflected the increasing enlargement of individuals' private space and the enhancement of the sense of privacy. And, the residential group itself changed too, which indicated that private space had won more independence and more privacy gradually. Furthermore, many changes in the residential habits showed that the sense of privacy became stronger than before, and it gained popularity step by step. In short, private life in England had experienced many obvious and significant changes during that important changing period, and it had more privacy, more individualism and was of more human characteristics. The essential characters of modern private life established gradually in both social life and activities and in people's concepts and consciousness.
