Objective To analyze the result of malaria surveillance and malaria epidemiologic characteristics from 1998 to 2003 in Guangxi, and to provide scientific proof for formulating malaria surveillance methods at the late-stage of malaria control in the areas with An anthropophagus as vector. Methods The data of blood smear examination of febrile patients from local residents and mobile population, surveillance of IFAT in focus residents in 199842003 were collected from 15 counties and retrospectively analyzed. Results The annual blood examination rate (ABER) was 0.28~10.8% in 15 counties. The average positive rates of blood examination were 0.04% and 0.86% in the febrile patients of local residents and mobile population respectively. The percents of returned patients acquired the infection in other areas and the patients from outside were accounted for 28.85% and 16.06% respectively. The indigenous cases and imported cases accounted for 55.09% (487/884) and 44.91% (397/884) of the total malaria cases respectively. The positive rate of IFAT in focus residents was 0.13%. 487 local malaria cases mostly distributed in the counties of Huanjiang, Nandan, Sanjiang, Rongshui and Shangsi. Conclusion The malaria incidence in An. anthropophagus distributing areas was under 1/10000.The indigenous cases of malaria was dominated in 5 counties ,while in other 10 counties the imported malaria cases was dominated. The situation of malaria in this area is stable.
