摘要
刘铭传抚台期间,以其对铁路之于台湾海防和经济建设作用的深刻认识为思想基础,把兴办铁路作为治台要务之一。在台湾铁路建设的筹备、施工和铁路竣工后的运营等各个环节上都投入了极大的精力。台湾铁路的修建,成为台湾近代化进程的重大标志,开启了我国自行筹集资金兴办铁路的先河。
As a governor of Taiwan assigned by the Qing Emperor, Liu Mingchuan is devoted to the establishment of railways for the sea-shore defense and economic restoration. Liu Mingchuan pays a great attention to the preparation, construction and operation of the railway system in Taiwan. Doubtless the Taiwan railways mark not only a mile-stone in its contemporary progress, but also pioneer the non-governmental financing in history.
