In the sacrificial area within the smaller sub-city site of middle Taosi period, there re- main the foundations of a rammed-earth structure in the shape of the greater part of a round (ⅡFJT1). It is situated to the south of the southern wall (Q6) of the greater sub-city that also belongs to the middle Taosi period. The arc faces to the south. Its southeast was excavated in an area of over 600 sq m in the year of 2003, with three rammed-earth retaining walls revealed. Originally there must have been a three-tier terrace. The outer wall measures 22-25 m in radius and encloses an area of about 1, 400 sq m. Between the immature-soil core of the terrace and the third retaining wall, 11 square pillars of rammed earth were built in a row with 10 intervals, each measuring 15-20 cm in width and all having been filled with mixed earth. From the center of the round through nine reconstructed intervals (not including the first eastern one), one can see 9 ridges of Chongfeng Hill correspondingly. The whole structure must have functioned chiefly as an observatory and also as a sacrificial place. Its auxiliary buildings include a semi-lunar immature-soil platform, an eastern flight of steps, roadside ditches and a southeastern corner gate. This building complex was built and used at the latest in the period of middle Taosi culture and was leveled away in the late Taosi.
