Parts of the Zoumalou slips have been published. The experts' studies, I am afraid, arenot careful enough and some of their decipherment invite question. In this essay the authorlooks at three documents which he considers rather representative. The first is a report onthe investigation of a case in which an officer by the name of Xudi was accused of embez-zling and wasting up part of the sale of official salt, a misdeed that threw him into cus-tody. Since the man refused the judgment of the first trial, another judge take ordered togo over his case again. As the result, the first trial was reconfirmed, and the accused even-tually accepted the accusation. The second is a letter from an officer Dou Tong who recom-mended a private school student to the local government. The letter indicates that otherways of recommendation existed beside those recorded in historical annals. The third is areport from the Nanxiang government which checked, at the order from above, the identityof a Nanxiang resident by the name of Pan Yi who was recommended by an officer Chen-jing. According to the report, Pan was not a private school student. All the three docu-ments sheds much light on the then political and legal system.
