本文从西欧文艺复兴以来特别是启蒙运动的文化背景出发 ,观察斯威夫特《格列佛游记》中对飞岛及其科学家的描述 ,进而探索斯威夫特的科学观及其意义。本文比较了启蒙思想家对科学的态度与启蒙文学作品所反映的科学形象的差异 ,指出《格列佛游记》
This thesis tries to make a description of the flying island and the scientists in Guliver's Travels . The point of departure is an analysis of the cultural background of the Enlightenment. By so doing, the thesis tries to explore Jonathan Swift's idea of science and evaluate its significance. After making a comparison of the great Enlightenment thinkers' positive attitudes towards science and what Swift described in his literary works, the thesis points out that the ironic tone on science in Guliver's Travels is similar to that of criticism on science in the French Enlightenment literature.
