Andrew Jackson Downing is often hailed as the father of landscape architecture and horticulture in the United States.Under the brilliance of this dazzling aura,Downing’s identity as the founder of American architecture was deliberately or unconsciously ignored.This article analyzes Downing’s related writings and design practice to demonstrate his historical contribution to American domestic rural architecture and his exploration of human satisfactory dwellings.
