This study presents an investigation into the semantic change of negative emotive intensifiers in English, taking dead as an example.Using data from the Oxford English Dictionary and the Corpus of Historical American English, this paper examines the diachronic change of the“dead+ADJ”construction in terms of its token and type frequencies.By employing word embeddings,a technique in natural language processing, the paper identifies the change of the collocates of dead in meaning. This study finds that.(1)dead has undergone grammaticalization, transitioning from a negative emotive word to an intensifier;and(2)the grammaticalization of dead is motivated by cognitive factors:conceptual metonymy and metaphor. This paper summarizes the process of the emergence of intensifiers from negative emotional words, and generalizes the key role of conceptual metonymy and metaphor in the change of word meaning.
