摘要
在五四时期,关于中国文明如何复兴问题,知识者主要持三种立场:全盘西化、中西调和、归宗儒家。三种文明论之间所构成的激烈对抗性,其实是世界范围内围绕现代性所展开的文明冲突的本土表征。革命与复古、全盘西化与归宗儒家,评判的态度与永恒的复归,构成20世纪中国文明复兴运动的复合面向,并突出体现于五四新文化运动。辩证言之,致力再造文明的五四新文化运动,是一次在激进革命中纠结保守趋向的复古革命;始于欧洲文艺复兴的全球现代性进程,则是对人类文明轴心期的革命性复归。人类历史上的每一次文明复兴,总是生成于革命与复古的变奏中。实际上,文明不仅是一个社会的物质文化实践的整体性综合,也体现为对于人类未来命运的创造性想象,其目的是无限敞开人类社会发展的多元可能。故此,以中国为方法重构现代世界的文明图景,这才是五四中国文明复兴论的真正价值所在。
During the period of the May 4 th Movement,the intellectuals mainly held three viewpoints on how to revive Chinese civilization:wholesale Westernization,harmony between China and the West,and return to Confucianism.The fierce antagonism among the three theories of civilization is actually the native representation of the clash of civilizations around modernity in the world.The three viewpoints and the attitude of judgment and eternal involution constitute the compound facet of the Chinese civilization revival movement in the 20 th century.This is especially reflected in the May 4 th New Cultural Movement.Dialectically speaking,the May 4 th New Cultural Movement devoted to the reconstruction of civilization is a retro revolution that entangles conservative trends in the radical revolution.It started from the global modernity process of European Renaissance,but it is a revolutionary return to the axial period of human civilization.Every renaissance of civilization in human history is always generated in the variation of revolution and retro.In fact,civilization is not only a holistic synthesis of the material and cultural practice of a society,but also embodies a creative imagination of the future destiny of human beings with the purpose of opening up the infinite possibilities for the development of human society.Therefore,it is the real value of the theory of the rejuvenation of Chinese civilization in the May 4 th Movement to reconstruct a civilization vision of the modern world with China as the example.
