Jewish and Christian history is replete with various kinds of images, murals and sculptures representing Bible stories, which can be seen as a form of artistic exegesis. The example of Genesis 22:1-14 shows how Christian artists’depictions of the"Sacrifice of Isaac"share both differences and similarities with Jewish artists’depictions of the"Binding of Isaac."Artistic exegesis has conveyed particular exegetical understandings of the artists, revealed lost exegetical traditions, and formed a positive and complementary relationship with literary interpretation, allowing a more comprehensive analysis of the Biblical text,as well as indicating a shared artistic exegetical encounter between Judaism and Christianity.
