The Integration of Ecocriticism and Comparative Literature—A Win-Win Academic Strategy

Ecocriticism with a greening promise originating first in U.S.A.has developed into an international and multicultural movement.Interdisciplinarity is its defining feature,and both transnationality and trans-civilizationality are its increasingly obvious features.Thus ecocriticism in a sense is an interdisciplinary and transnational,even transcivilizational literary critical movement.We could safely say that there exists much affinity between ecocriticism and comparative literature because the latter is an interdisciplinary,transnational and transcivilizational study of literatures,and that 'inter' or 'trans' is its defining feature.About the significance of interdisciplinarity of ecocriticism,American pioneering ecocritic Joseph Meeker first discussed in his work The Comedy of Survival,and Glen A.Love also talked a lot in his work,and regarded it as its defining feature,but less about others.Here,I will chiefly focus on its transnationality and cross-civilizationality.Then,how can we step over national and civilizational boundaries to effectively carry out ecocritical studies in a legitimate way? The methods and approaches of comparative literature could provide ecocritics much guidance.In the meantime comparative literature also profits a lot from the interdisciplinary hybridization with ecocriticism.From academic point of view,the integration of comparative literature and ecocriticism is a mutually beneficial academic strategy for both.For ecocritics,especially for the Western scholars,cross-cultural or transcivilizational approach could help them discover different cultural eco-models or ecoparadigms which do not operate within or are even opposed to the paradigms of the Western world,including U.S.culture,understand the various ways other peoples interpret and deal with nature,and listen to 'the voice in the margin'.The crosscultural or trans-civilizational approach also could help correct the prevalent superiority complex of Western scholars,who often equate the particular with the universal.On the other hand,ecocriticism can promote the greening of comparative literature themes,open up new academic dimension for it,and let it play an important role in coping with global environmental issues.Regarding how to integrate the two disciplines,the author discusses it in the paper. 展开更多

Focusing on data imbalance and intraclass variation,an improved pedestrian detection with a cascade of complex peer AdaBoost classifiers is proposed.The series of the AdaBoost classifiers are learned greedily,along with negative example mining.The complexity of classifiers in the cascade is not limited,so more negative examples are used for training.Furthermore,the cascade becomes an ensemble of strong peer classifiers,which treats intraclass variation.To locally train the AdaBoost classifiers with a high detection rate,a refining strategy is used to discard the hardest negative training examples rather than decreasing their thresholds.Using the aggregate channel feature(ACF),the method achieves miss rates of 35%and 14%on the Caltech pedestrian benchmark and Inria pedestrian dataset,respectively,which are lower than that of increasingly complex AdaBoost classifiers,i.e.,44%and 17%,respectively.Using deep features extracted by the region proposal network(RPN),the method achieves a miss rate of 10.06%on the Caltech pedestrian benchmark,which is also lower than 10.53%from the increasingly complex cascade.This study shows that the proposed method can use more negative examples to train the pedestrian detector.It outperforms the existing cascade of increasingly complex classifiers. 展开更多

In the twenty-first century, Qian added the comment that “Rights to the statement 'Literature is the study of man' should go to H. Taine.” In this paper, I argue that in fact, Gorky never suggested calling literature “the study of man,” nor did Taine ever say in so many words “Literature is the study of man.” Nevertheless, it certainly took extraordinary courage and talent for Qian Gurong to have put forward this proposition and expounded on the “humane” character of literature given the political and literary situation of China in the 1950s. His act was of more than usual significance, for it had an enormously positive influence on literary creation and research in the succeeding half century. At the same time, it is worth noting that the proposition “Literature is the study of man” is not justifiable in terms of the principles of logic. In the new century, as we examine this proposition more rigorously, we can see its deficiencies more clearly: that is, man is the center, rather than the sole object, of literary description; man is a measure, rather than the sole measure, of literary criticism. Digital technologies are increasingly used in the interpretation and presentation process at cultural heritage sites,shifting the manner of heritage display from previous ways,which tended to be monolithic and static,to a more diversified,experiential,and interactive approach and enabling new connections between heritage and the public.Digital experience is gradually becoming an important component of visitors’heritage experience.However,little attention has been paid to the influence and effects that these technologies have on the visitor experience,and a corresponding measurement framework for the heritage digital experience is still lacking.To contribute to the design,implementation,and management of digital display systems at cultural heritage sites,this research aims to evaluate visitors’expectations,acceptance,and experience of digital interpretation and presentation technologies.A mixed methodology,combining questionnaires based on a digital experience evaluation framework and semi-structured interviews,was adopted and used in Old Zuoying City(OZC),a typical heritage site for the application of digital display technologies in Taiwan.Our study indicates that digital display technologies received high acceptance from heritage visitors and had a positive impact on some specific aspects,such as encouraging their exploration of and further learning about the site,helping them better visualize the richness of heritage,and creating new experiences of perceiving,engaging,and communicating with history.In addition,based on the survey findings,a number of recommendations for the current stage of digital display design are presented.The survey results and evaluation framework can be used as a reference for other research on heritage visitors and to improve digital interpretation and presentation design. 展开更多

Zheng Wenguang described the concept of"science fiction realism"in 1981 as a form of misreading,aiming at exploring social problems.Personally,he was rethinking and developing a series of his own writing ideas since the 195os.As for the science fiction community,it was a powerful challenge to the idea that"science fiction is a part of popular science,"which had existed for almost five decades.As soon as Zheng's idea was put forward,it quickly received a warm response from Jin Tao and Wei Yahua,etc.The works,such as"The Moonlight Island"(Yueguangdao)and"Destiny Nightclub"(Mingyun yezonghui),broke down the narrow boundaries of contemporary popular science discourse."Science fiction realism"should be understood to mean"realistic science fiction."However,from a theoretical perspective,all kinds of writings in this period not only narrowed and vulgarized the understanding of"realism,"especially as they ignored heated discussions of this concept,but also blurred the core and boundary of the"science fiction"genre and even dissolved its autonomy to a certain extent.Zheng and his proponents'explorations are Chinese science fiction authors'beneficial attempts to construct local traditions.They reflect a profound anxiety towards reality and a strong desire for self-identification among a generation of science fiction authors.The core point they observe reappears in various guises across the development of the science fiction genre in the following decades.The basic conceptions they are trying to convey have also become important resources for the development of Chinese science fiction literary theory. 展开更多
