The tensile and wear properties of beryl-Al6061 composites have been evaluated and compared with its base alloy. The results revealed that the Al6061-10 wt% of beryl composites shows an improvement of 15.38% in tensile strength and specific wear rate decreases by 8.9% at normal load of 9.81N when compared to matrix i.e. base alloy. Significant improvement in tensile properties and hardness are noticed as the wt% of the beryl particles increases. The microstructures of the composites were studied to know the uniform dispersion of the beryl particles in matrix. It has been observed that addition of beryl particles significantly improves ultimate tensile strength and hardness properties as compared with that of unreinforced matrix.展开更多

The transportation modes are full container load (FCL) and less than container load (LCL). Deteriorating items, such as specialty gases which are applied in semiconductor fabrication, deteriorate owing to environmental variation. Exact algorithms are proposed to determine the optimal inventory policies over a finite and an infinite planning horizon. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the proposed solution procedures. In addition, when the deterioration rate is large, the results of the proposed model perform better compared to the inventory model proposed by Rieksts and Ventura (2008).展开更多

Quality function deployment (QFD) is a widely used management technique for understanding the voice of the customer (VOC), however, QFD depends heavily on human subject judgment during extracting customer requirements and determination of the importance weights of customer requirements. QFD pro-cess and related problems are so complicated that it is not easily used. In this paper, based on a general data structure of product family, generic bill of material (GBOM), association rules analysis was introduced to construct the classification mechanism between customer requirements and product architecture. The new method can map customer requirements to the items of product family architecture respectively, accomplish the mapping process from customer domain to physical domain directly, and decrease mutual process between customer and designer, improve the product design quality, and thus furthest satisfy customer needs. Finally, an example of customer requirements mapping of the elevator cabin was used to illustrate the proposed method.展开更多

Meanwhile, most approaches are single-platform methods, in which design variables are either shared across all product variants or not at all. While in multiple-platform design, platform variables can have special value with regard to a subset of product variants within the product family, and offer opportunities for superior overall design. An information theoretical approach incorporating fuzzy clustering and Shannon's entropy was proposed for platform variables selection in multiple-platform product family. A 2-level chromosome genetic algorithm (2LCGA) was proposed and developed for optimizing the corresponding product family in a single stage, simultaneously determining the optimal settings for the product platform and unique variables. The single-stage approach can yield im-provements in the overall performance of the product family compared with two-stage approaches, in which the first stage involves determining the best settings for the platform and values of unique variables are found for each product in the second stage. An example of design of a family of universal motors was used to verify the proposed method.展开更多

Based on analyzing the process capability indices, a production department can trace and improve a poor process to enhance quality levels and satisfy customers. The process capabilit y analysis can also serve as an important reference for making decisions for imp roving the global quality of all products. Since C p and C pk are failed to account for process centering, the index C pm is developed. The index C pm takes the process centering into consideration and is su itable for the processes with nominal-the-best type. There are other indices l ike C pu and C pl, and those indices are used for unilateral s pecification processes. To assist companies to address the challenge, this research presents a design for environment (DfE) methodology to evaluate and improve derivative consumer electronic product development using a back-propagation neural network (BPNN) model and a technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) method. Based on use of a BPNN, the life cycle assessment (LCA) models are developed to estimate quantities of hazardous chemical substances and energy consumption for a derivative consumer electronic product throughout the product life cycle. A performance evaluation and improvement model for DfE is then devised based on the TOPSIS method to analyze the ecodesign performance and provide concrete improvement strategies. With the aforementioned analysis of environmental performance, an enterprise can profoundly understand and significantly enhance the relative DfE performance of a new product compared to the similar competitive products. Finally, we apply an optical mouse development project as a case to elaborate and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. These analytical results can let us understand the DfE performance ranking and acquire the maximum reduced quantity of each DfE criterion for each module of a new product. Meanwhile, to enhance the green competitiveness of the new product, we recommend that the engineers should decrease the area of the circuit board of the new product. In addition, the material of the USB cable for the new product should be switched from the PVC material to the PE material.展开更多

The relationship between the traditional and the proposed scheduling problem is shown and objective is to determine a job sequence in which the total energy consumption is minimized. To provide an efficient solution framework, composite lower bounds are proposed to be used in a solution approach with the name of Boundsbased Nested Partition(BBNP). A worst-case analysis on shortest process time heuristic is conducted for theoretical measurement. Computational experiments are performed on randomly generated test instances to evaluate the proposed algorithms. Results show that BBNP has better performance than conventional heuristics and provides considerable computational advantage.展开更多

Patents also serve as a strategic data source that can be mined to discover state-of-the-art technical development and subsequently help guide R&D investments. This research incorporates an ontology schema to extract and represent patent concepts. A clustering algorithm with non-exhaustive overlaps is proposed to overcome deficiencies with exhaustive clustering methods used in patent mining and technology discovery. The non-exhaustive clustering approach allows for the clustering of patent documents with overlapping technical findings and claims, a feature that enables the grouping of patents that define related key innovations. Legal advisors can use this approach to study potential cases of patent infringement or devise strategies to avoid litigation. The case study demonstrates the use of non-exhaustive overlaps algorithm by clustering US and Japan radio frequency identification (RFID) patents and by analyzing the legal implications of automated discovery of patent infringement.展开更多
