A new type of AB_5-x%LaMg_3(x=2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8)composite hydrogen storage alloys were prepared by sintering the powder mixtures of a commercial AB_5 alloy and LaMg_3 alloy. The phase structure and electrochemical characteristics of the composite hydrogen storage alloys were also studied. It is shown that AB_(5)-x%LaMg_3(x=2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8)composites have mult; phase structure. The matrix phase has CaCu_5 structure, the second phase is LaNi_3 phase. The maximum discharge capacity, discharge capacity at low temperature and HRD of AB_5 alloy electrodes are greatly improved after the composite. The maximum discharge capacity of the composite electrodes increases from 325 mAh·g^(-1) for x=0 to 358 mAh·g^(-1) for x=5, and the HRD of the composites for x=5 at the current density of 1200 mA·g^(-1)30% of that of the alloy at 60 mA·g^(-1). The discharge capacity of AB_5-x%LaMg_3 composite alloy electrode at 233 K is up to 174 mAh·g^(-1). The improvement of the electrochemical characteristics of the composite electrodes seems to be related with formation of the LaNi_3 second phase. 展开更多

The phase structure and electrochemical characteristics of Ml ((Ni3.55Co0.75Mn0.40Al0.30)sx ( x = 0.88, 0.92, 0.96, 1.00) hydrogen storage alloys were studied. The effect of the stoichiometric ratio on the phase structure and electrochemical characteristics was analyzed. The results of XRD reveal that all the alloys consist mainly of LaNi5 phase with the hexagonal CaCu5 structure. But a few of the diffraction peaks of La2Ni7 phase on XRD pattern are observed when x ≤ 0.92, and with decreasing x, the intensity of La2Ni7 diffraction peaks increases and the values of lattice parameters a and cell volume increase, c and c/a of LaNi5 phase decrease gradually. When x≥0.96, La2Ni7 phase disappears and the alloys become single CaCu5-type. The electrochemical tests show that the maximum discharge capacity, high rate dischargeability and low temperature dischargeability are improved to different degrees by adjusting the stoichiometric ratio. 展开更多

High quality poly(5-cyanoindole) (P5CI) films were electrosynthesized by direct anodic oxidation of 5-cyanoindole on stainless steel sheet in the mixed electrolytes of boron trifluoride diethyl etherate (BFEE) and diethyl ether (EE) (by volume 1:1) + 0,05 mol L^-1 Bu4NBF4. The film formed can be peeled off the electrode into freestanding films, The addition of EE into BFEE can improve the solubility of monomer. P5CI films obtained from this medium showed excellent electrochemical behavior with conductivity of 10^-2 S cm^-1, Structural studies showed that the polymerization of 5-cyanoindole occurred at the 2,3 position. As-formed P5CI films were thoroughly soluble in strong polar organic solvent dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) while partly soluble in tetrahydrofuran (THF) or acetone. Fluorescence spectral studies indicated that P5CI was a good blue-ight emitter. 展开更多

The crystal structure, the phase composition and the electrochemical characteristics of Zr0.9Ti0.1(Ni1.1Mn0.7V0.2)x (x=0.90, 0.95, 1.00, 1.05) alloys were investigated by means of XRD, SEM, EDS and electrochemical measurements. It was shown that all alloys are multiphase with C15 Laves phase as a main phase along with C14 phase and some secondary phases. And the amounts of the C14 phase and secondary phases in the four alloys increases with decreasing x. The results indicated that the various stoichiometric ratios have great effects on the electrochemical characteristics such as the maximum discharge capacity, discharge rate capability and self-discharge properties etc. for Zr0.9Ti0.1(Ni1.1Mn0.7 V0.2)X (x=0.90, 0.95, 1.00, 1.05) alloys. The hyper-stoichiometric Zr0.9 Ti0.1(N1.1Mn0.7 V0.20)1.05 exhibits the maximum discharge capacity of 332mAh-g-1. The C14 phase and secondary phases seems to improve discharge rate capability of the alloys. 展开更多

Improving occupant's satisfaction represents an important target oriented both towards the increment of productivity and towards the reduction of operational costs related to health and safety of employees.These considerations are the bases of an interdisciplinary cross-country survey on the human-building interaction in office buildings.The proposed study presents findings from the survey conducted at the University of Calabria(Italy).In particular,both demographic characteristics of the sample and data regarding comfort,satisfaction,and productivity are processed and investigated.Descriptive statistical analysis is developed with the aim of highlighting the influence of indoor comfort conditions on the perceived productivity of employees.Particular attention is dedicated to the study of genderrelated differences in internal environment perception.Indoor temperature,quality of indoor air,and acoustics are the most selected causes of dissatisfaction and low perceived productivity both for women and men.The responses regarding satisfaction level and perceived productivity are also combined by defining a quantitative indicator named Office Productivity and Satisfaction index(OPSi)that is the ratio between the perceived productivity and the satisfaction level of the considered comfort condition.Causes of discomfort are also analyzed and demonstrated gender-related differences in workplaces quality evaluation. 展开更多

To investigate the nitrifying activities of different soil types, soil samples collected from 8-, 50- and 90-year old tea orchards, the adjacent wasteland, and 90-year old forest were measured for their nitrification potentials using the conventional soil incubation and the liquid incubation method. Among different soil types, the nitrification potential of soil in tea orchards was higher than that of wasteland and forest soils. The slurry shaken liquid incubation method was confirmed to be more accurate and have reliable results than the soil incubation. Interestingly, experimental result revealed that the generally applied pH value of 7.2 for the liquid media was not the optimal pH for these acid soils with a strong buffer capacity. This suggested that tea orchard soils may have nitrifiers requiring pHneutral condition for the best activity. Our data also showed that treatment with the commonly used nitrogen fertilizer urea significantly improved nitrification potential of the soils; such enhancement effect was stronger on all of three tea orchard soils than on wasteland and forest soils, and also stronger on the younger (8- and 50-year old) tea orchard soils than on the older one (90-year old). 展开更多

The influence of nano-particles on CO2 absorption was studied experimentally in a stirred thermostatic reactor. Nano-A1203 and carbon nanotube (CNT) particles which showed different hydrophobic properties were chosen for the investigation. The experimental results were compared with that of micron-size activated carbon (AC) and Al2O3 particles. From the results, no enhancement by micron-size A1203 was found, and with the increase of A1203 concentration, the enhancement factor decreased. However, nano-Al203 showed a weak enlaancement tor me COz absorption. AC and CNT particles all intensified the gas-liquid mass transfer effectively, yet the trend of the enhancement factor with stirring speed for the two particles was different. With increasing stirring speed, the enhancement factor of AC particles was decreased, wl'iereas in CNT suspensions it was increased. The experimental phenomena demonstrated a difference in enhancement mechanism for different size particles. For nano-particles, besides the influence of adsorbability and hydrophobicity, the micro-convection caused by Brownian motion should be also taken into account. Considering the micro-convection effect, a theoretical model was developed to shed light on the absorption enhancement bv nano-oarticles. 展开更多

The paper deals with the application of multiwall carbon nanotubes(CNTs) to the adsorption of dyes from wastewater. Textile dyes are dangerous and diffused pollutant in wastewater, and the paper results confirmed the good adsorption ability of CNTs, with respect to classic active carbon, even for different dye types. The effect of surface treatments of CNTs was primarily investigated, revealing that neither the presence of residual catalyst nor common surface treatment(oxidation) affects the CNT's performances. Therefore less expensive nonpurified CNTs were assessed as good and economically convenient alternative for the process. In order to gain in generality in adsorption kinetic modelling, the parameters of the "best fitting" pseudo-second order model have been correlated to the main process variables(the dye initial concentration and the specific mass of CNTs.) setting-up a predictive kinetic model useful design new application of these materials in currently operating industrial operations for adsorption. In addition, isothermal data were used to screen all the relevant adsorption isotherms models and the Temkin model was confirmed as the more effective to accurately fit equilibrium data for any of the considered different dye types. 展开更多

SrTiO3 thin film was successfully prepared on the functionalized organic self-assembled monolayers(SAMs) by the Liquid Phase Deposition(LPD) method.The as-prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD),atomic force microscope(AFM),scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and metallographic microscope.Measurement of contact angle showed that the hydrophobe substrate was changed into hydrophile by UV irradiation.AFM photographs of octadecyl-trichloro-silane self-assembled monolayer(OTS-SAM) surface approved that UV irradiation did change the morphology of OTS monolayer and provided evidence for the conversion of hydrophilic characteristic.Photographs of Metallographic Microscope showed that OTS-SAM had an active effect on the deposition of SrTiO3 thin film.XRD and SEM indicated that the thin film was of pure cubic phase SrTiO3 and composed of nanosized grains with a size in the range of 100-500 nm.The formation mechanism of the SrTiO3 film was proposed. 展开更多

Anaerobic biodegradation of RDX and HMX with different co-substrates

Simulated wastewater of hexahydro-l,3,5-trinitro-l,3,5-triazine (RDX) and octahydro- 1,3,5,7-tetranitro- 1,3,5,7- tetrazocine (HMX) was treated under anaerobic conditions with co-substrates such as ammonium chloride, dex- trose, sodium acetic, sodium nitrate and sulfate. The results showed that with nitrogen compounds such as ammonium chloride added as co-substrate, no significant change was observed, indicating that the molar ratio of N/C for RDX and HMX is sufficient for biodegradation. With the addition of dextrose and acetate to the system, biodegradation efficiency was enhanced greatly. For example, with dextrose as the co-substrate, degradation efficiency of 99.1% and 98.5% was achieved for RDX and HMX, respectively, after treatment for 7 days. When so- dium acetic was used as the co-substrate, the enhancement of degradation percentage was similar, but was not as high as that with dextrose, indicating the selectivity of RDX and HMX to co-substrate during anaerobic degrada- tion. With sodium nitrate as the co-substrate, the degradation efficiency of RDX or HMX decreased with the increase of salt concentration. Sodium sulfate has no significant effect on the biodegradation of RDX and HMX. A well-selected co-substrate should be employed in applications for degradation of RDX and HMX wastewaters. 展开更多

A new carbonaceous catalyst with sulfonic acid group (-SO3H) was prepared by incomplete carbonization of β-cyclodextrin followed by sulfonation.The sulfonated amorphous carbon was characterized by IR,elemental analysis,DSC-TGA and PXRD,and the catalytic activity was investigated to be an efficient catalyst for the esterification reactions with maximum yield of 87%.The sulfonated carbonaceous catalyst was readily separated from the reaction solution and keeps approximately equal catalytic activity.The results confirm that the active centre is the hydrophilic sulfonic acid functional group in the esterification reactions. 展开更多

With the growing concern about the water environment,the advanced oxidation process of persulfate activation assisted by photocatalysis has attracted considerable attention to decompose dissolved organic micropollutants.In this work,to overcome the drawbacks of the photocatalytic activity reduction caused by the photo-corrosion of non-stoichiometric BiO_(2–x),a novel material with amorphous FeOOH in situ grown on layered BiO_(2–x) to form a core-shell structure similar to popcorn chicken-like morphology was produced in two simple and environmentally beneficial steps.Through a series of degradation activity tests of hybrid materials under different conditions,the as-prepared materials exhibited remarkable degradation activity and stability toward tetracycline in the FeOOH@BiO_(2–x)/Vis/PS system due to the synergism of photocatalysis and persulfate activation.The results of XRD,SEM,TEM,XPS,FTIR,and BET show that the loading of FeOOH increases the specific surface area and active sites appreciably;the heterogeneous structure formed by FeOOH and BiO_(2–x) is more favorable to the effective separation of photogenerated carriers.The optimal degradation conditions were at a catalyst addition of 0.7 g·L^(–1),a persulfate concentration of 1.0 g·L^(–1),and an initial pH of 4.5,at which the degradation rate could reach 94.7%after 90 min.The influence of typical inorganic anions on degradation was also examined.ESR studies and radical quenching experiments revealed that·OH,SO_(4)^(-)·,and·O_(2)^(-)were the principal active species generated during the degradation of tetracycline.The results of the 1,10-phenanthroline approach proved that the effect of dissolved iron ions on the tetracycline degradation was limited,and the interfacial reaction that occurs on the active sites on the material's surface was a critical factor.This work provides a novel method for producing efficient broad-spectrum Bismuth-based composite photocatalysts and photocatalytic-activated persulfate synergistic degradation of tetracycline. 展开更多

Biolog, 16S rRNA gene denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), and phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analyses were used to assess soil microbial community characteristics in a chronosequence of tea garden systems (8-, 50-, and 90- year-old tea gardens), an adjacent wasteland, and a 90-year-old forest. Biolog analysis showed that the average well color development (AWCD) of all carbon sources and the functional diversity based on the Shannon index decreased (P 〈 0.05) in the following order: wasteland 〉 forest 〉 tea garden. For the DCCE analysis, the genetic diversity based on the Shannon index was significantly lower in the tea garden soils than in the wasteland. However, compared to the 90-year-old forest, the tea garden soils showed significantly higher genetic diversity. PLFA analysis showed that the ratio of Gram positive bacteria to Cram negative bacteria was significantly higher in the tea garden soils than in the wasteland, and the highest value was found in the 90-year-old forest. Both the fungal PLFA and the ratio of fungi to bacteria were significantly higher in the three tea garden soils than in the wasteland and forest, indicating that fungal PLFA was significantly affected by land-use change. Based on cluster analysis of the soil microbial community structure, all three analytical methods showed that land-use change had a greater effect on soil microbial community structure than tea garden age. 展开更多

The aim of this work was to investigate how the acid sites concentration, strength, distribution and typology(Br?nsted and Lewis) affect methanol conversion, DME selectivity and coke formation. It was found that the aluminium content affects slightly acid sites strength whilst a relevant effect on acid sites concentration and distribution(Br?nsted/Lewis) was observed as 24% of Lewis sites were found on Alrichest samples, whilst less than 10% of Lewis acid sites were observed on FER at higher Si/Al ratio. All the investigated catalyst samples showed a selectivity toward DME always greater than 0.9 and samples with the lowest Si/Al ratio exhibit the best performances in terms of methanol conversion, approaching the theoretical equilibrium value(around 0.85) at temperatures below 200 °C. Turnover-frequency analysis suggests that this result seems to be related not only to the higher amount of acid sites but also that the presence of Lewis acid sites may play a significant role in converting methanol. On the other hand, the presence of Lewis acid sites, combined with a high acidity, promote the formation of by-products(mainly methane) and coke deposition during the reaction. As final evidence, all the investigated catalysts exhibit very high resistance to deactivation by coke deposition, over 60 h continuous test, and a GC–MS analysis of the coke deposited on the catalyst surface reveals tetra-methyl benzene as main component. 展开更多

Green process engineering refers to innovative equipment and process methods that are expected to bring about substan- tial improvements in chemical and any other manufacturing and processing aspects. It includes decreasing production costs, equipment size, energy consumption, and waste generation, and improving remote con- trol, information fluxes, and process flexibility. Membrane-based technology assists in the pursuit of these principles, and the potential of membrane operations has been widely recognized in the last few years. This work starts by presenting an overview of the membrane operations that are utilized in water treatment and in the production of energy and raw materials. Next, it describes the potential advantages of innovative membrane-based integrated systems. A case study on an integrated membrane system (IMS) for seawa- ter desalination coupled with raw materials production is presented. The aim of this work is to show how membrane systems can contribute to the realization of the goals of zero liquid discharge (ZLD), total raw materials utilization, and low energy consumption. 展开更多

The dechromization of Cu-Cr-Al alloys was investigated by a static immersing corrosion test. The influence of NaCl on the dechromization was analyzed by electrochemical test, scanning electron microscopy, optical microscopy and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. The results show that the dechromization of Cu-Cr-Al alloys will take place in a H3PO4 solution of 11.32 mol/L at 55 ℃. And the corrosion process occurs initially at the interface between Cu and Cr phase, and then extends inward Cr-phase inside. The addition of NaCl into H3PO4 solutions can shorten the dechromization incubation time, decrease the dechromization temperature and concentration of H3PO4 solution, and increase the tendency of dechromization. But, the NaCl scarcely has an effect on the form and structure of chromium depleted-layer. 展开更多
