AIM:To evaluate the vision status and sociodemographic associations of visual acuity(VA)in an urban and rural population in a coastal province of southern China.METHODS:The Fujian Eye Study,a population-based cross-se...AIM:To evaluate the vision status and sociodemographic associations of visual acuity(VA)in an urban and rural population in a coastal province of southern China.METHODS:The Fujian Eye Study,a population-based cross-sectional study,was performed from May 2018 to October 2019.Totally 10044 participants over 50 years old from all nine cities in Fujian Province were enrolled,and underwent a questionnaire and a series of standard physical and ocular examinations.VA was measured by E Standard Logarithmic Visual Acuity Chart(GB 11533-1989).Data was double entered with Epi Data v3.1 for data collation and Stata/SE statistical software v15.1 was used to analyze the data.RESULTS:Totally 8211(81.8%)participants were finally included and were divided into urban populations(4678 subjects),rural populations(n=3533),coastal residents(n=6434),and inland residents(1777 subjects);4836 participants were female.The mean age was 64.39±8.87 y(median 64 y;range 50-98 y).The mean presenting VA was 0.61±0.30(0.23±0.27 log MAR),and the mean best correctedvisual acuity(BCVA)was 0.82±0.28(0.08±0.19 log MAR).In the multiple regression analysis,BCVA was significantly correlated with several socioeconomic and biologic factors,including age(P<0.001),education level(P<0.001),income(P=0.005),rural residency(P<0.001),inland residency(P=0.001)and refractive error(P<0.001),while sex(P=0.194)was independent with BCVA.CONCLUSION:Accessible services and eye health policies targeting the elderly,people with high myopia and people living in rural or inland areas are needed.展开更多

AIM: To evaluate the outcomes and safety of lamellar keratoplasty(LK) assisted by fibrin glue in corneal perforations. ·METHODS: Six eyes of 6 patients affected by different corneal pathologies(2 posttraumatic co...AIM: To evaluate the outcomes and safety of lamellar keratoplasty(LK) assisted by fibrin glue in corneal perforations. ·METHODS: Six eyes of 6 patients affected by different corneal pathologies(2 posttraumatic corneal scar and 3 bacterial keratitis) underwent LK procedures by using fibrin glue. The mean corneal perforation diameter was 1.35 ±0.64mm(range,0.7-2.5mm),and the greatest diameter of the ulcerative stromal defect was 2.47 ± 0.77mm in average(range,1.5-3.5mm). The donor corneal lamella diameters were 0.20-mm larger and thicker than the recipient to restore a physiologic corneal thickness and shape: mean donor diameter was 8.34 ± 0.28mm(range,8.2-8.7mm) and mean thickness was 352±40.27mm(range,220-400mm). Mean follow-up was 7.33±1.97 months(range,6-11 months). Postoperatively,the graft status,graft clarity,anterior chamber response,the visual prognosis,intraocular pressures,and postoperative complications were recorded. ·RESULTS:Allthecornealperforationsweresuccessfully healed after the procedure. The best-corrected visual acuity(BCVA) ranged from 20/1 000 to 20/50 in their initial presentation,and from 20/100 to 20/20 in their last visit,showed increase in all the patients. No major complications such as graft dislocation and graft failure were noted. Neovascularization developed in the superficial stroma of donor graft in 1 case. High intraocular pressure developed on day 2 after surgery,while was remained in normal range after application of anti-glaucomatous eyedrops for 1 week in 1 case. ·CONCLUSION: Fibrin glue-assisted sutureless LK is valuable for maintaining the ocular integrity in the treatment of corneal perforations.展开更多

The effect of the second messengers cAMP and cyclic cGMP on Cx43 protein expression was also investigated. Enucleated human eyes (remnant after corneal transplantation) and bovine eyes were used. Tissue preparations of the anterior segments of the eyes have proceeded for immunohistochemical staining with polyclonal antibodies of Cx43 and Cx40. Isolated ciliary bodies of human and bovine eyes were incubated with cAMP analog 8-Bromo-cAMP or the cGMP analog 8-Bromo-cGMP, the expression of Cx43 protein in the tissues was then assessed by Western blot assay. Both in human and bovine ciliary bodies, strong immunoreactivity of Cx43, but not Cx40, was observed predominantly in the apical cytoplasmic portions of the pigment ciliary epithelial cells and non-pigmented ciliary epithelial cells. In human ciliary body both cAMP and cGMP up-regulated Cx43 expression, while in the bovine ciliary body, cGMP increased Cx43 expression but cAMP decreased it. Cx43 is the major component of human and bovine gap junctions in the ciliary epithelium. When a patient has glaucoma, cataracts and irregular astigmatism ...Significance: So far, many scholars have studied the astigmatism caused by glaucoma surgery, but they cannot provide enough useful help for the clinic. When a patient has glaucoma, cataracts and irregular astigmatism at the same time, it is often difficult to achieve satisfactory results. Purpose: This study intends to describe a case of a patient with glaucoma, irregular astigmatism, and cataract who was successfully treated. Additionally, it can serve as a useful source of inspiration for the future care of patients like this. Case Presentation: A 24-year-old male with keratoconus in the past. He had undergone a corneal crosslinking operation in the right eye and a penetrating keratoplasty in the left eye due to his long history of keratoconus in both eyes. Right now, the keratoconus in that eye is stable. Unfortunately, he has now been diagnosed with open-angle glaucoma and complicated cataracts in both eyes, and he was admitted to our hospital for surgery. The right eye had significant irregular astigmatism, which was discovered during the preoperative assessment, and the implantation of a Toric intraocular lens was unable to produce good results. Finally, we chose to perform EXPRESS glaucoma drainage device implantation + phacoemulsification + intraocular lense (ZEISS CT ASPHINA 409MP) implantation. The patient had stable postoperative astigmatism with rule thanks to the traction effect of the scleral flap suture. Astigmatism was typically stable six months after surgery, and the corrected visual acuity with glasses had improved to 20/25. Conclusion: This patient suffers from cataracts, keratoconus, glaucoma, and irregular astigmatism. Due to the interconnectedness of these four disorders, simultaneous success is challenging. We realized that surgically induced astigmatism, frequently affects vision early after filtering surgery for glaucoma patients. In the instance of this patient, we tightly sutured the scleral flap and using tractive action, established regular astigmatism. After the patient’s astigmatism stabilized, optometry was given to correct the vision. This technique should result in much better visual acuity. Finally, it came to pass.展开更多

AIM:To investigate the myopia awareness level,knowledge,attitude,and skills at baseline and to implement and evaluate the efficacy of myopia prevention health education among Chinese students.METHODS:A total of 1000 m...AIM:To investigate the myopia awareness level,knowledge,attitude,and skills at baseline and to implement and evaluate the efficacy of myopia prevention health education among Chinese students.METHODS:A total of 1000 middle school students from 2 middle schools were invited to participate in the study,and myopia prevention health education was conducted.The students were assessed at baseline,followed by a survey.The efficacy of health education was evaluated using the self-comparison method pre-and post-health education.RESULTS:The study included 957 and 850 pre-and post-health education par ticipants,respectively.The baseline knowledge of all respondents on myopic symptoms(87.5%),myopia is a risk of eyes(72.9%),myopia prevention(91.3%),myopia increases with age(86.7%),performing periodic eye examinations(92.8%),and one first,one foot,and one inch(84.8%)significantly increased after health education(P<0.001 for all).However,the percentage of students who still did not think it necessary to take breaks after 30-40min of continuous near work was 27.0%.The opinion that“myopia can be cured”was still present in 38.3%.CONCLUSION:Implementing school-based myopia prevention health education improves knowledge,attitudes,and skills regarding myopia among Chinese middle school students.展开更多
With the popularity and development of artificial intelligence(AI),disease screening systems based on AI algorithms are gradually emerging in the medical field.Such systems can be used for primary screening of disease...With the popularity and development of artificial intelligence(AI),disease screening systems based on AI algorithms are gradually emerging in the medical field.Such systems can be used for primary screening of diseases to relieve the pressure on primary health care.In recent years,AI algorithms have demonstrated good performance in the analysis and identification of lesion signs in the macular region of fundus color photography,and a screening system for fundus lesion signs applicable to primary screening is bound to emerge in the future.Therefore,to standardize the design and clinical application of macular region lesion sign screening systems based on AI algorithms,the Ocular Fundus Diseases Group of Chinese Ophthalmological Society,in collaboration with relevant experts,developed this guideline after investigating issues,discussing production evidence,and holding guideline workshops.It aimed to establish uniform standards for the definition of the macular region and lesion signs,AI adoption scenarios,algorithm model construction,dataset establishment and labeling,architecture and function design,and image data acquisition for the screening system to guide the implementation of the screening work.展开更多
Purpose:To evaluate near,intermediate,distance visual acuity and stereopsis after bilateral implantation of Toric intraocular lenses(IOLs)in high myopic patients with astigmatism.Methods:Bilateral Toric or non-Toric I...Purpose:To evaluate near,intermediate,distance visual acuity and stereopsis after bilateral implantation of Toric intraocular lenses(IOLs)in high myopic patients with astigmatism.Methods:Bilateral Toric or non-Toric IOL implantation(n¼40 eyes each)was performed on high myopic cataract eyes with astigmatism.Best-corrected distance visual acuity(BCDVA),uncorrected intermediate visual acuity(UCIVA),uncorrected near visual acuity(UCNVA),residual refractive astigmatism(RRA),and near,intermediate,and distance stereoacuity were measured postoperatively at 7 days,1 month,and 3 months.Results:The three-month postoperative BCDVA,UCIVA,and UCNVA of the Toric group were 0.08±0.07,0.30±0.11,and 0.23±0.14 LogMAR.All improved over the preoperative assessments(P<0.05).The RRA,UCIVA,and UCNVA were significantly better in the Toric group than the non-Toric group at all follow-up examinations(all P<0.05).At 3 months,the median near and intermediate stereoacuity of the Toric group were 100(range 40–400)and 120(range 50–400)arcsec,which were better than the non-Toric group(both P<0.05).Fine near stereopsis100 arcsec was present in 65%of the Toric patients,and 50%had good intermediate stereopsis of100 arcsec.However among non-Toric patients,only 15%and 5%achieved fine near and intermediate stereopsis.The postoperative BCDVA and best-corrected distance stereoacuity were similar in the two groups(P>0.05).Conclusions:In bilateral high myopic cataract patients with astigmatism,Toric IOLs not only improved UCIVA,UCNVA,and RRA,but also enhanced near and intermediate stereopsis acuity.展开更多

Methods: From January 1, 2000 to August 31, 2022, we searched PubMed, Science Citation Index Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wanfang Database for pertinent material about the treatment of AACG with various operations. The imported literature was carefully vetted using the inclusion and exclusion criteria, assessed for quality, and the raw data were retrieved and integrated into EndNoteX9. For the meta-analysis, STATA 16.0 and RevMan 5.3 were used as the tools. Results: The meta-analysis includes 20 clinical investigations in all, involving 1463 eyes. The quality of the literature was rated as excellent and the data homogeneity among the studies was excellent based on the various study types that were included in the literature. According to a meta-analysis, phacoemulsification with goniosynechialysis is superior to trabeculectomy for treating acute angle-closure glaucoma because it results in improved postoperative visual acuity, lower intraocular pressure, a broader anterior chamber depth, and fewer complications. Conclusion: If conditions allow, phacoemulsification in conjunction with goniosynechialysis performs better than trabeculectomy in terms of visual acuity, intraocular pressure, anterior chamber depth, and comorbidities.

文摘Dry eye disease is the most prevalent ocular surface disease in eye clinics.The deficiency of tears is regarded as one of the main pathogenic factors for this disease.Due to the fact that the components of tears are still far beyond our knowledge,the restoration of physiological tears remains the optimum choice for dry eye patients.However,the traditional way to stimulate tear production by systemic administration of muscarinic agonists usually encounters severe side effects.Recently,Nakamachi and colleagues reported that PACAP,a native neurotransmitter present in tear fluid,could stimulate main lacrimal gland secretion and relieve dry eye-like symptoms in PACAP knockout mice.The finding of PACAP and its underlying mechanisms suggest a new modality for dry eye treatment via targeted topical tear stimulations.

文摘AIM:To investigate the myopia awareness level,knowledge,attitude,and skills at baseline and to implement and evaluate the efficacy of myopia prevention health education among Chinese students.METHODS:A total of 1000 middle school students from 2 middle schools were invited to participate in the study,and myopia prevention health education was conducted.The students were assessed at baseline,followed by a survey.The efficacy of health education was evaluated using the self-comparison method pre-and post-health education.RESULTS:The study included 957 and 850 pre-and post-health education par ticipants,respectively.The baseline knowledge of all respondents on myopic symptoms(87.5%),myopia is a risk of eyes(72.9%),myopia prevention(91.3%),myopia increases with age(86.7%),performing periodic eye examinations(92.8%),and one first,one foot,and one inch(84.8%)significantly increased after health education(P<0.001 for all).However,the percentage of students who still did not think it necessary to take breaks after 30-40min of continuous near work was 27.0%.The opinion that“myopia can be cured”was still present in 38.3%.CONCLUSION:Implementing school-based myopia prevention health education improves knowledge,attitudes,and skills regarding myopia among Chinese middle school students.
文摘With the popularity and development of artificial intelligence(AI),disease screening systems based on AI algorithms are gradually emerging in the medical field.Such systems can be used for primary screening of diseases to relieve the pressure on primary health care.In recent years,AI algorithms have demonstrated good performance in the analysis and identification of lesion signs in the macular region of fundus color photography,and a screening system for fundus lesion signs applicable to primary screening is bound to emerge in the future.Therefore,to standardize the design and clinical application of macular region lesion sign screening systems based on AI algorithms,the Ocular Fundus Diseases Group of Chinese Ophthalmological Society,in collaboration with relevant experts,developed this guideline after investigating issues,discussing production evidence,and holding guideline workshops.It aimed to establish uniform standards for the definition of the macular region and lesion signs,AI adoption scenarios,algorithm model construction,dataset establishment and labeling,architecture and function design,and image data acquisition for the screening system to guide the implementation of the screening work.

文摘Purpose:To evaluate near,intermediate,distance visual acuity and stereopsis after bilateral implantation of Toric intraocular lenses(IOLs)in high myopic patients with astigmatism.Methods:Bilateral Toric or non-Toric IOL implantation(n¼40 eyes each)was performed on high myopic cataract eyes with astigmatism.Best-corrected distance visual acuity(BCDVA),uncorrected intermediate visual acuity(UCIVA),uncorrected near visual acuity(UCNVA),residual refractive astigmatism(RRA),and near,intermediate,and distance stereoacuity were measured postoperatively at 7 days,1 month,and 3 months.Results:The three-month postoperative BCDVA,UCIVA,and UCNVA of the Toric group were 0.08±0.07,0.30±0.11,and 0.23±0.14 LogMAR.All improved over the preoperative assessments(P<0.05).The RRA,UCIVA,and UCNVA were significantly better in the Toric group than the non-Toric group at all follow-up examinations(all P<0.05).At 3 months,the median near and intermediate stereoacuity of the Toric group were 100(range 40–400)and 120(range 50–400)arcsec,which were better than the non-Toric group(both P<0.05).Fine near stereopsis100 arcsec was present in 65%of the Toric patients,and 50%had good intermediate stereopsis of100 arcsec.However among non-Toric patients,only 15%and 5%achieved fine near and intermediate stereopsis.The postoperative BCDVA and best-corrected distance stereoacuity were similar in the two groups(P>0.05).Conclusions:In bilateral high myopic cataract patients with astigmatism,Toric IOLs not only improved UCIVA,UCNVA,and RRA,but also enhanced near and intermediate stereopsis acuity.

文摘Dear Editor,Descemet’s membrane detachment(DMD)is considered as a potential sight-threatening complication following various intraocular surgeries,particularly cataract surgery[1].The labile adhesion between the Descemet’s membrane(DM)and the posterior corneal stromal layer can be easily separated with minimal mechanical force.Several risk factors have been associated with the development of DMD including old age,improper intraoperative operation,corneal ectatic disorders,and endothelial disorders and so on[1-4].
