The predominance of nouns in English and verbs in Chinese makes the transformation of part of speech an essential aspect of translating English into Chinese. This paper examines the distinctions in part of speech between the two languages, and explores how to transform the nouns, prepositions, adjectives and adverbs in English into verbs in Chinese, aiming to guide translation practices in terms of both theory and practice.展开更多

By examining ideological, poetic, and patronage factors in translation, the study reveals the impact of different socio-cultural contexts in various historical periods on the translated works. The findings indicate that Yan Fu’s translation, written in classical Chinese, was deeply influenced by the reformist thought of the late Qing Dynasty, aiming to promote social reform by disseminating scientific ideas. The Science Press edition reflects the educational needs of the socialist construction era, emphasizing knowledge dissemination and ideological critique. The Peking University Press edition focuses on conveying the spirit of science and rational methodology, showcasing the development of modern translation theories. This research demonstrates that the cultural context of each era played a pivotal role in translation practices, shaping the translator’s choices and strategies as well as influencing reader reception of the translated works.展开更多

It plays a significant role not only in language and cultural contexts, but also in social interaction and multicultural exchange. Based on Grice’s cooperative principle as the theoretical framework, this paper analyzes some examples of verbal humor in the American sitcom Friends and the process of the actors producing humor by violating the cooperative principle in detail. This paper explores the role of violating the cooperation principle in pragmatics within the context of English humor, so as to improve the readers’ understanding of the phenomenon and internal mechanisms of humor in the English language. The purpose of this study is to reveal the effectiveness and practicability of pragmatics in interpersonal communication, promote the communication and exchange between the two sides of the dialogue, and improve the readers’ intercultural communication ability.展开更多

As an artificial intelligence technology-driven natural language processing tool, ChatGPT has performed exceptionally well in the translation of general texts. However, when applied to texts of specific genres and cultural backgrounds, there is still room for improvement in the quality of the translations. Therefore, this paper takes Yang Xianyi’s translation of the classic literary work A Dream in Red Mansions as an example, and conducts a comparative study on the material culture-loaded words in the translation from the perspectives of accuracy, readability, and cultural conveyance. Based on the research findings, suggestions are proposed for the translation work of classical literary works and their post-translation editing.展开更多
