In addition to being driven by tidal winds, the sporadic E(Es)layers are modulated by gravity waves(GWs),although the effects are not yet comprehensively understood. In this article,we discuss the effects of mesoscale GWs on the Es layers determined by using a newly developed model,MISE-1D(one-dimensional Model of Ionospheric Sporadic E),with low numerical dissipation and high resolution.Driven by the wind fields resolved by the high-resolution version of the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with thermosphere and ionosphere extension(WACCM-X),the MISE-1D simulation revealed that GWs significantly influence the evolution of the Es layer above 100 km but have a very limited effect at lower altitudes. The effects of GWs are diverse and complex, generally including the generation of fluctuating wavelike structures on the Es layer with frequencies similar to those of the GWs.The mesoscale GWs can also cause increases in the density of Es layers,or they can disperse or diffuse the Es layers and increase their thickness. In addition, the presence of GWs is a key factor in sustaining the Es layers in some cases. 展开更多

Theoretical analysis has demonstrated that the dispersion relation of chorus waves plays an essential role in the resonant interaction and energy transformation between the waves and magnetospheric electrons.Previous quantitative analyses often simplified the chorus dispersion relation by using the cold plasma assumption. However, the applicability of the cold plasma assumption is doubtful, especially during geomagnetic disturbances. We here present a systematic statistical analysis on the validity of the cold plasma dispersion relation of chorus waves based on observations from the Van Allen Probes over the period from 2012 to 2018.The statistical results show that the observed magnetic field intensities deviate substantially from those calculated from the cold plasma dispersion relation and that they become more pronounced with an increase in geomagnetic activity or a decrease in background plasma density. The region with large deviations is mainly concentrated in the nightside and expands in both the radial and azimuthal directions as the geomagnetic activity increases or the background plasma density decreases. In addition, the bounce-averaged electron scattering rates are computed by using the observed and cold plasma dispersion relation of chorus waves.Compared with usage of the cold plasma dispersion relation, usage of the observed dispersion relation considerably lowers the minimum resonant energy of electrons and lowers the scattering rates of electrons above tens of kiloelectronvolts but enhances those below.Furthermore, these differences are more pronounced with the enhancement of geomagnetic activity or the decrease in background plasma density. 展开更多

In channel reservoirs,a quantitative characterization of landslide-generated impulse wave-structure interactions is essential for evaluating potential damage to infrastructure and dams.In this study, the problem of landslide-generated impulse waves that attack a vertical wall was investigated in a wave channel via a smooth particle hydrodynamics(SPH)method coupled with a Chrono model. The results indicated that the longitudinal velocity beneath the leading wave crest of an incident impulse wave deviated significantly from solitary wave theory. Moreover, the variation rate in the vertical velocity along the water column coincided with the theoretical prediction only for small wave amplitudes.Nevertheless, the maximum run-up height of an impulse wave can be accurately predicted via the solitary wave theory. Moreover, the maximum wall force during impulse wave-wall interaction was significantly larger than that during solitary wave reflection, particularly for high incident wave amplitudes.Overall, the present study demonstrated some striking differences in the interactions of landslide-generated impulse waves and solitary waves with a vertical wall. 展开更多

Ice-breaking methods have become increasingly significant with the ongoing development of the polar regions.Among many ice-breaking methods,ice-breaking that utilizes a moving load is unique compared with the common collision or impact methods.A moving load can generate flexural-gravity waves(FGWs),under the influence of which the ice sheet undergoes deformation and may even experience structural damage.Moving loads can be divided into above-ice loads and underwater loads. For the above-ice loads,we discuss the characteristics of the FGWs generated by a moving load acting on a complete ice sheet,an ice sheet with a crack, and an ice sheet with a lead of open water. For underwater loads,we discuss the influence on the ice-breaking characteristics of FGWs of the mode of motion, the geometrical features, and the trajectory of motion of the load.In addition to discussing the status of current research and the technical challenges of ice-breaking by moving loads, this paper also looks ahead to future research prospects and presents some preliminary ideas for consideration. 展开更多

Steel-concrete composite structures(SCCS)have been widely used as primary load-bearing components in large-scale civil infrastructures. As the basis of the co-working ability of steel plate and concrete, the bonding status plays an essential role in guaranteeing the structural performance of SCCS.Accordingly, efficient non-destructive testing(NDT)on interfacial debondings in SCCS has become a prominent research area.Multi-channel analysis of surface waves(MASW)has been validated as an effective NDT technique for interfacial debonding detection for SCCS.However, the feasibility of MASW must be validated using experimental measurements. This study establishes a high-frequency data synchronous acquisition system with 32 channels to perform comparative verification experiments in depth.First, the current sensing approaches for high-frequency vibration and stress waves are summarized.Secondly, three types of contact sensors, namely, piezoelectric lead-zirconate-titanate(PZT)patches,accelerometers,and ultrasonic transducers, are selected for MASW measurement. Then, the selection and optimization of the force hammer head are performed.Comparative experiments are carried out for the optimal selection of ultrasonic transducers,PZT patches, and accelerometers for MASW measurement. In addition, the influence of different pasting methods on the output signal of the sensor array is discussed.Experimental results indicate that optimized PZT patches, acceleration sensors, and ultrasonic transducers can provide efficient data acquisition for MASW-based non-destructive experiments. The research findings in this study lay a solid foundation for analyzing the recognition accuracy of contact MASW measurement using different sensor arrays. 展开更多

Porous materials are widely used in the field of protection because of their excellent energy absorption characteristics. In this work,a series of polyurethane microscopic models are established and the effect of porosity on the shock waves is studied with classical molecular dynamics simulations.Firstly, shock Hugoniot relations for different porosities are obtained, which compare well with the experimental data. The pores collapse and form local stress wave, which results in the complex multi-wave structure of the shock wave. The microstructure analysis shows that the local stress increases and the local velocity decreases gradually during the process of pore collapse to complete compaction. Finally,it leads to stress relaxation and velocity homogenization. The shock stress peaks can be fitted with two exponential functions, and the amplitude of attenuation coefficient decreases with the increase of density.Besides, the pore collapse under shock or non-shock are discussed by the entropy increase rate of the system. The energy is dissipated mainly through the multiple interactions of the waves under shock. The energy is dissipated mainly by the friction between atoms under non-shock. 展开更多

Thickness measurement plays an important role in the monitoring of pipeline corrosion damage. However, the requirement for prior knowledge of the shear wave velocity in the pipeline material for popular ultrasonic thickness measurement limits its widespread application. This paper proposes a method that utilizes cylindrical shear horizontal(SH) guided waves to estimate pipeline thickness without prior knowledge of shear wave velocity. The inversion formulas are derived from the dispersion of higher-order modes with the high-frequency approximation. The waveform of the example problems is simulated using the real-axis integral method. The data points on the dispersion curves are processed in the frequency domain using the wave-number method. These extracted data are then substituted into the derived formulas. The results verify that employing higher-order SH guided waves for the evaluation of thickness and shear wave velocity yields less than1% error. This method can be applied to both metallic and non-metallic pipelines, thus opening new possibilities for health monitoring of pipeline structures. 展开更多

This work is devoted to the experimental study of inertial wave regimes in a non-uniform rotating cylinder with antiparallel inclined ends.In this setting, the cross-section of the cylinder is divided into two regions where the fluid depth increases or decreases with radius.Three different regimes are found:inertial wave attractor, global oscillations(the cavity’s resonant modes)and regime of symmetric reflection of wave beams. In linear wave regimes,a steady single vortex elongated along the rotation axis is generated. The location of the wave’s interaction with the sloping ends determines the vortex position and the vorticity sign.In non-linear regimes several pairs of the triadic resonance subharmonics are detected simultaneously. The instability of triadic resonance is accompanied by the periodic generation of mean vortices drifting in the azimuthal direction. Moreover, the appearance frequency of the vortices is consistent with the low-frequency subharmonic of the triadic resonance. The experimental results shed light on the mechanisms of the inertial wave interaction with zonal flow and may be useful for the development of new methods of mixing. 展开更多

In recent years, the exploitation of offshore wind resources has been attached with greater importance. As a result,semi-submersible floating wind turbines(FWTs)have gradually become a popular research topic, with the structural strength being a research hotspot as it can ensure the safe operation of FWTs.The severe sea conditions of freak waves result in enormous wave heights, extremely fast wave speeds, and concentrated energy. Thus,it is difficult to accurately simulate these effects on the loads of floating wind turbines using the potential flow theory and other theories. In this paper, the structural strength of a floating wind turbine under the action of freak waves is analyzed based on the CFD-FEA coupled method. The effects of the mooring system and the wind load are considered in the time domain, and the CFD method is applied to analyze the wave load of the floating wind turbine under the extreme sea state of freak waves. The strength and motion of the floating wind turbine float structure are analyzed by combining the CFD method and the FEA method, and the analytical results of the mutual transfer of these two methods are taken as the initial quantities for further analysis. The accuracy of the analytical model of the CFD-FEA method is verified by the results of the tank test analysis, and the structural strength analysis under freak wave conditions is carried out for a new type of floating wind turbine. The results of this research provide useful guidance and references for the design and engineering applications of offshore floating wind turbines. 展开更多

This paper presents an analogical study between electromagnetic and elastic wave fields, with a one-to-one correspondence principle established regarding the basic wave equations, the physical quantities and the differential operations.Using the electromagnetic-to-elastic substitution, the analogous relations of the conservation laws of energy and momentum are investigated between these two physical fields. Moreover, the energy-based and momentum-based reciprocity theorems for an elastic wave are also derived in the time-harmonic state, which describe the interaction between two elastic wave systems from the perspectives of energy and momentum, respectively. The theoretical results obtained in this analysis can not only improve our understanding of the similarities of these two linear systems, but also find potential applications in relevant fields such as medical imaging,non-destructive evaluation, acoustic microscopy, seismology and exploratory geophysics. 展开更多

The generation and propagation mechanism of strong nonlinear waves in the South China Sea is an essential research area. In this study, the third-generation wave model WAVEWATCH Ⅲ is employed to simulate wave fields under extreme sea states. The model, integrating the ST6 source term, is validated against observed data, demonstrating its credibility. The spatial distribution of the occurrence probability of strong nonlinear waves during typhoons is shown, and the waves in the straits and the northeastern part of the South China Sea show strong nonlinear characteristics. The high-order spectral model HOS-ocean is employed to simulate the random wave surface series beneath five different platform areas. The waves during the typhoon exhibit strong nonlinear characteristics, and freak waves exist. The space-varying probability model is established to describe the short-term probability distribution of nonlinear wave series. The exceedance probability distributions of the wave surface beneath different platform areas are compared and analyzed. The coupling between wind stress perturbations and sea surface temperature(SST)perturbations induced by tropical instability waves(TIWs)in the Pacific Ocean has been revealed previously and proven crucial to both the atmosphere and ocean. However,an overlooked fact by previous studies is that the loosely defined“TIWs”actually consist of two modes, including the Yanai wave-based TIW on the equator(hereafter eTIW)and the Rossby wave-based TIW off the equator(hereafter vTIW).Hence, the individual feedbacks of the wind stress to the bimodal TIWs remain unexplored. In this study, individual coupling relationships are established for both eTIW and v TIW,including the relationship between the TIW-induced SST perturbations and two components of wind stress perturbations, and the relationship between the TIW-induced wind stress perturbation divergence(curl)and the downwind(crosswind)TIW-induced SST gradients. Results show that, due to different distributions of eTIW and vTIW,the coupling strength induced by the eTIW is stronger on the equator, and that by the vTIW is stronger off the equator. The results of any of eTIW and vTIW are higher than those of the loosely defined TIWs.We further investigated how well the coupling relationships remained in several widely recognized oceanic general circulation models and fully coupled climate models. However, the coupling relationships cannot be well represented in most numerical models. Finally,we confirmed that higher resolution usually corresponds to more accurate simulation. Therefore, the coupling models established in this study are complementary to previous research and can be used to refine the oceanic and coupled climate models. 展开更多

The hydrodynamic performance of a high forward-speed ship in obliquely propagating waves is numerically examined to assess both free motions and wave field in comparison with a low forward-speed ship. This numerical model is based on the time-domain potential flow theory and higher-order boundary element method, where an analytical expression is completely expanded to determine the base-unsteady coupling flow imposed on the moving condition of the ship. The ship in the numerical model may possess different advancing speeds,i.e.stationary,low speed, and high speed. The role of the water depth, wave height, wave period, and incident wave angle is analyzed by means of the accurate numerical model. It is found that the resonant motions of the high forward-speed ship are triggered by comparison with the stationary one.More specifically,a higher forward speed generates a V-shaped wave region with a larger elevation, which induces stronger resonant motions corresponding to larger wave periods. The shoaling effect is adverse to the motion of the low-speed ship, but is beneficial to the resonant motion of the high-speed ship. When waves obliquely propagate toward the ship, the V-shaped wave region would be broken due to the coupling effect between roll and pitch motions. It is also demonstrated that the maximum heave motion occurs in beam seas for stationary cases but occurs in head waves for high speeds. However, the variation of the pitch motion with period is hardly affected by wave incident angles. 展开更多

The sound of space-time at the large scale is observed in the form of gravitational waves, which are disturbances in space-time produced by wavelike distortions (or kinks) in the gravitational field of an accelerating parcel or distribution of energy. In this study, we investigate a hypothetical wave mode of quantum space-time, which suggests the existence of scalar Planck waves. According to this hypothesis, the sound of quantum space-time corresponds to kinks propagating in the gravitational displacement field of an oscillating energy density. In evaluating the emission of scalar Planck waves and their effect on the geometry of space-time, one finds that they not only transport a vanishingly small amount of energy but can also be used to simulate gravity. 展开更多
