This mixed-methods study presents a needs analysis to investigate the workplace English language needs of medical students in China who are learning and using English as non-native speakers,the circumstances in which ...This mixed-methods study presents a needs analysis to investigate the workplace English language needs of medical students in China who are learning and using English as non-native speakers,the circumstances in which the various language skills are required,and stakeholders’perceived workplace preparedness in the light of language-related instructional provision during medical training.A leading university in China was chosen as the study case.Altogether,294 online questionnaires were collected from undergraduate medical students,graduate medical students and recent graduates working as physicians,and 33 semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with undergraduate medical students,graduate medical students,recent graduates working as physicians,medical teachers,English for Medical Purposes(EMP)teachers,program leaders and English-speaking patients.Results showed that in addition to physicians experiencing pressure to publish scientific articles internationally,participants attached greater importance to physicians’oral English communication ability,especially in undertaking clinical consultations in English,working with medical interpreters or acting as ad hoc interpreters.The participants also reported a lack of relevant EMP courses or trainings available at this university.Given these communicative events that physicians face in China,EMP courses need to include training in these specific areas.展开更多

English and Mandarin have significant differences in their vowel and consonant systems, tones, intonation, and syllable structures. A deep understanding of these differences allows learners to engage in targeted pronunciation training, reducing accent interference. This research provides guidance for improving language teaching methods, enabling teachers to design more effective pronunciation strategies and exercises based on the students’ native language backgrounds, thus enhancing learning outcomes. Additionally, cross-linguistic studies aid in improving speech recognition and conversion technologies, achieving higher accuracy and naturalness in multilingual speech processing systems. From a cultural exchange perspective, understanding and respecting the phonetic characteristics of different languages help to enhance the effectiveness and mutual understanding in cross-cultural communication. This thesis uses a comparative research method to elucidate the study of English and Mandarin pronunciation patterns. It begins with an analysis of the characteristics and similarities of the pronunciation patterns in both languages. The thesis then examines the differences between English and Mandarin pronunciation patterns through four aspects: the number and complexity of vowel phonemes, types and distribution of consonant phonemes, tones and stress, and intonation and phonetic phenomena. 文摘In China,English is required in every school of China and many achievements have been made in this part of the world.The English level of Chinese has been greatly improved but the problems still exist in this country.Communicative approach and many other successful teaching methods have been employed;however,the problems in English teaching still occur and last to the present time.Many efforts have been made to have outstanding and successful results in English teaching.We therefore hope much success will be achieved as quickly as possible.
文摘Based on the reliability theory in language testing,this study analyzes the midterm English test of a first grade class in Hangzhou using SPSS software.We will analyze the overall structure and reliability of the test paper,and use cloze as a representative of objective questions to calculate their difficulty and discrimination,in order to explore the quality of the questions and the mastery of the knowledge learned by students.The purpose of this analysis and research is to improve the quality of exam questions and help teachers get useful information from exam results,thereby improving teaching quality.
文摘Exploring the differences in phonemes and cross-linguistic influences, particularly by comparing the pronunciation patterns of English and Mandarin, is crucial for language learners. Such comparative studies can help learners better understand and overcome the pronunciation difficulties encountered during second language acquisition. English and Mandarin have significant differences in their vowel and consonant systems, tones, intonation, and syllable structures. A deep understanding of these differences allows learners to engage in targeted pronunciation training, reducing accent interference. This research provides guidance for improving language teaching methods, enabling teachers to design more effective pronunciation strategies and exercises based on the students’ native language backgrounds, thus enhancing learning outcomes. Additionally, cross-linguistic studies aid in improving speech recognition and conversion technologies, achieving higher accuracy and naturalness in multilingual speech processing systems. From a cultural exchange perspective, understanding and respecting the phonetic characteristics of different languages help to enhance the effectiveness and mutual understanding in cross-cultural communication. The comparative study of English and Mandarin pronunciation patterns not only provides a theoretical foundation for language education and technological applications but also promotes effective communication in multilingual environments. This thesis uses a comparative research method to elucidate the study of English and Mandarin pronunciation patterns. It begins with an analysis of the characteristics and similarities of the pronunciation patterns in both languages. The thesis then examines the differences between English and Mandarin pronunciation patterns through four aspects: the number and complexity of vowel phonemes, types and distribution of consonant phonemes, tones and stress, and intonation and phonetic phenomena. Finally, based on the comparative analysis of the differences, the thesis offers targeted policy recommendations for learning English and Mandarin.
文摘Based on the theory of stance in interactive linguistics and the corpus of Bridging Cultures,this paper studies the stance-taking of advanced oral English.By using a combination of quantitative and qualitative research to sort out and analyze the advanced oral corpus,the research finding suggests that people mainly use adjectives to express positive and negative stances,followed by nouns and verbs.Among the many grammatical constructions to express stances,“sub+is+adj”is the dominant structure,followed by“adv+adj”.It mainly presents four kinds of stance-taking in advanced oral English based on Bridging Cultures teaching materials:(1)positively evaluation stance-taking;(2)positive attitude stance-taking;(3)negative evaluation stance-taking;and(4)negative attitude stance-taking.
文摘Mobile learning integrates mobile technology with digital learning,offering flexible,personalized content and portable equipment.It enables access to rich content and enhances learning efficiency.Therefore,it has become mainstream to utilize mobile devices for English learning among university students’English learning.The current study aims to examine the current situation and influencing factors of university students’English mobile learning.98 university students in one university of Shanghai participated the study and the questionnaire was used to collect the data.The results indicated that most university students already have electronic devices to support mobile learning.Personal factors,environmental factors,digital literacy,and technological capabilities are the main factors affecting university students’English mobile learning.The current study has implications for learners,teachers,and software developers.Learners should adjust their learning motivation,play an active role,and fully utilize the mobile platform to obtain resources and improve learning efficiency.Teachers should incorporate the advantages of mobile teaching and promote categorized and tiered teaching.Software developers should add new functions on the basis of meeting the basic needs of learners and continuously innovate the mobile learning platform.
文摘In the new era when demands for flexible intellectual skills are increasing,strengthening the cultivation of critical thinking ability of students has become one of the key purposes of higher education.This paper intends to discuss how to cultivate students’critical thinking ability through English classroom presentations.It points out that during the whole process,teachers’guidance plays an indispensable role.Only when both teachers and students are aware that classroom presentations are a golden opportunity for the cultivation of students’critical thinking ability and carry this awareness into their English classes,can English presentations be brought into full play.
