Three types of activators such as sodium hydroxide, calcium oxide and triethanolamine(TEA)are used to establish different activation environments to address the problems associated with the process of activating fly ash paste. We conducted mechanical tests and numerical simulations to understand the evolution of microstructure, and used environmental scanning electron microscopy(ESEM)and energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS)techniques to analyze the microenvironments of the samples. The mechanical properties of fly ash paste under different activation conditions and the changes in the microstructure and composition were investigated. The results revealed that under conditions of low NaOH content(1%-3%),the strength of the sample increased significantly. When the content exceeded 4%,the rate of increase in strength decreased.Based on the results, the optimal NaOH content was identified, which was about 4%.A good activation effect, especially for short-term activation(3-7 d),was achieved using TEA under high doping conditions. The activation effect was poor for long-term strength after 28 days. The CaO content did not significantly affect the degree of activation achieved. The maximum effect was exerted when the content of CaO was 2%.The virtual cement and concrete testing laboratory(VCCTL)was used to simulate the hydration process, and the results revealed that the use of the three types of activators accelerated the formation of Ca(OH)_(2) in the system. The activators also corroded the surface of the fly ash particles, resulting in a pozzolanic reaction. The active substances in fly ash were released efficiently, and hydration was realized. The pores were filled with hydration products, and the microstructure changed to form a new frame of paste filling that helped improve the strength of fly ash paste. 展开更多

In-situ formed high Mn steel coating reinforced by carbides was formed by laser surface alloying(LSA).Laser alloyed layers on 1Cr18Ni9Ti steel with Mn+W_(2)C(specimen A),Mn+NiWC(specimen B)and Mn+SiC(specimen C)powders were fabricated to improve the wear and corrosion behavior of 1Cr18Ni9Ti steel blades in high speed mixers.Microstructure evolution, phases, element distribution, microhardness, wear and corrosion behavior of the laser alloyed layers were investigated. Results indicated that high Mn steel matrix composites with undissolved W_(2)C,WC and other in-situ formed carbides were formed by LSA with Mn+W_(2)C and Mn+NiWC while SiC totally dissolved into the high Mn matrix when adding Mn+SiC.Ni as the binding phase in Ni-WC powder decreased the crack sensitivity of the alloyed layer as compared with the addition of W_(2)C powder. An improvement in average microhardness was achieved in the matrix in specimen A,B and C,with the value of 615,602 and 277 HV_(0.5),while that of the substrate was 212 HV_(0.5).The increase of microhardness, wear and corrosion resistance is highly corelated to microstructure, formed phases, type and content of carbides,micro-hardness and toughness of the alloyed layers. 展开更多

To enhance the high-temperature oxidation resistance and mechanical properties of a secondgeneration nickel-based superalloy, various concentrations of lanthanum(La)ranging from 5.0×10^(-5)wt.%to 3.4×10^(-4)wt.%are added to the alloy. The microstructure of the nickel-based single crystal superalloy with trace of La was examined by means of SEM,EDS and TEM.Results show the addition of La decreases the segregation of elements and increases the amount ofγ/γ′eutectics of the as-cast alloy, and in the interdendritic region, the growth of eutectics is accompanied by the growth of strip clusters composed of Ni_(5)La and Ni_(3)Ta.As the La content in the alloy increases, the proportion of Ni_(5)La in the cluster increases. After heat treatment, incipient melting occurs in the cluster regions, leading to an increase in microporosity compared to the original as-cast samples.Furthermore, the heat treatment alters the shape of the clusters from a strip morphology to an elliptical one,and it changes their composition from Ni_(5)La and Ni_(3)Ta to a combination of Ni_(5)La,Ni_(3)Ta,and MC carbides. 展开更多

By using fatigue crack propagation testing and microstructural characterization, the crack fracture and propagation mechanisms of K4169 superalloy under various loads were investigated. The results demonstrate that the grain sizes of K4169 superalloy significantly increase, and the precipitation of the needle-likeδphase and the Laves phase is observed.Voids and microcracks form at location of Laves phase enrichment, creating conditions for crack propagation.By the a−N(a is the crack length, and N is the number of cycles)relationship curve, the change in the fatigue crack growth rate with the increasing number of cycles progresses through three separate stages. The fracture process of K4169 superalloy under low-stress cyclic loading(3 kN)exhibits the ductile fracture.Subsequently, the fracture process starts to change from the ductile fracture to the brittle fracture as the stress increases to 4.5 kN.In the microstructures of fractures in both stress states, intergranular propagation is the mechanism responsible for crack propagation. Moreover, the Laves phase exists near the fracture crack, which is in line with the post-service structural phenomenon. 展开更多

This work aimed to(i)understand conventional and pulse gas tungsten arc welding(GTAW)of AZ31B,and(ii)explore high frequency welding(100 Hz-1500 Hz).GTA welding with alternating current(AC)and direct current electrode positive(DCEP)polarities yielded crack-free partial penetration welds for6 mm thick AZ31B alloy sheet.Welding under direct current electrode negative(DCEN)polarity with identical parameters as that for AC and DCEP resulted in full penetration welds that had microcracks.Defect-free full-penetration welds could be accomplished with pulse GTA welding using DCEN polarity at a pulse frequency of 1 Hz with a pulse duration ratio of 1:1.The resultant DCEN P 1:1 weld metal had a microstructure finer than the conventional DCEN weld.Welds produced with pulse duration ratios of 1:2and 1:4 lacked penetration but had a much finer microstructures because of the lower heat input. The arc constriction by the high frequency pulsing in the Activ Arc■-High frequency(AA-HF)mode welding was responsible for deeper penetration.Welds produced under DCEN pulsing and AA-HF conditions had hardness higher than conventional DCEN,DCEP and AC GTA welds, attributed to the finer microstructure.AA-HF GTA welding produced defect free deeper penetration welds with good microstructural features/mechanical properties and also gave an advantage of 50%enhanced productivity when welded at1500 Hz. 展开更多

The effects of tungsten inert gas arc-assisted friction stir welding(TIG-FSW)on the microstructure, tensile properties and corrosion resistance of AA6016 and AA2519 alloys lap joints were investigated by means of optical microscope, scanning electron microscope, tensile test at room temperature, corrosion immersion tests and electrochemical measurements. The results show that the introduction of TIG arc during FSW process results in a more uniform microstructure of the joint with no tunnel hole defects.Furthermore,it enhances tensile strength and elongation of the joint with increased rates of 11.5%and 50.0%,respectively;meanwhile,the corrosion current density and largest corrosion depth are decreased with reduction rates of 78.2%and 45.7%,respectively.TIG-FSW can promote flow, contact and diffusion of materials, thus improving microstructure of the joint.Additionally,it reduces the size and number of secondary phase particles.Consequently, these factors contribute to the higher tensile properties and corrosion resistance of the joints. 展开更多

High-temperature and short-time(HTST)solution heat treatment combined with non-isothermal aging(NIA)was employed to regulate the microstructure and properties of Al−4.5Mg−2.0Zn−0.3Ag alloy. Results indicate that HTST solution heat treatment can not only retain partial deformation dislocations, but inhibit the recrystallization behavior and increase the proportion of low-angle grain boundaries(LAGBs).In the subsequent NIA process,HTST solution heat treatment combined with NIA is instrumental in restraining the degradation of dislocations and promoting precipitation of nano-scale T'-Mg_(32)(Al,Zn,Ag)49 phase, which improves the strength of the alloy greatly. In addition,a higher fraction of LAGBs and the discontinuous distribution of grain boundary precipitates caused by this novel technology meliorate the corrosion resistance of Al−4.5Mg−2.0Zn−0.3Ag alloy. 展开更多

Phosphogypsum has often been used as an effective and environmentally friendly binder for partial replacement of cement, improving the engineering properties of slurries with high water content. However, the influence of phosphogypsum on the physicomechnical properties of stabilized soil subjected to wettingedrying cycles is not well understood to date.In this study, the effect of phosphogypsum on the durability of stabilized soil was studied by conducting a series of laboratory experiments, illustrating the changes in mass loss,pH value and unconfined compressive strength(qu)with wettingdrying cycles. The test results showed that the presence of phosphogypsum significantly restrained the mass loss in the early stage(lower than the 4th cycle),which in turn led to a higher qu of stabilized soil than that without phosphogypsum. After the 4th cycle,a sudden increase in mass loss was observed for stabilized soil with phosphogypsum, resulting in a significant drop in qu to a value lower than those without phosphogypsum at the 6th cycle. In addition, the qu of stabilized soils correlated well with the measured soil pH irrespective of phosphogypsum content for all wettingedrying tests.According to the microstructure observation via scanning electron microscope(SEM)and X-ray diffraction(XRD)tests, the mechanisms relating the sudden loss of qu for the stabilized soils with phosphogypsum after the 4th wetting-drying cycle are summarized as follows:(i)the disappearance of ettringite weakening the cementation bonding effect,(ii)the generation of a larger extent of microcrack, and(iii)a lower pH value,in comparison with the stabilized soil without phosphogypsum. 展开更多

High-entropy alloys(HEAs),which were introduced as a pioneering concept in 2004,have captured the keen interest of nu-merous researchers.Entropy,in this context, can be perceived as representing disorder and randomness.By contrast, elemental composi-tions within alloy systems occupy specific structural sites in space,a concept referred to as structure. In accordance with Shannon entropy, structure is analogous to information.Generally, the arrangement of atoms within a material, termed its structure, plays a pivotal role in dictating its properties. In addition to expanding the array of options for alloy composites,HEAs afford ample opportunities for diverse structural designs. The profound influence of distinct structural features on the exceptional behaviors of alloys is underscored by numer-ous examples. These features include remarkably high fracture strength with excellent ductility, antiballistic capability, exceptional radi-ation resistance, and corrosion resistance. In this paper,we delve into various unique material structures and properties while elucidating the intricate relationship between structure and performance. 展开更多

The stability of the microstructure and mechanical properties of the pre-hardened sheets during the pre-hardening forming(PHF)process directly determines the quality of the formed components. The microstructure stability of the pre-hardened sheets was in-vestigated by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC),transmission electron microscopy(TEM),and small angle X-ray scattering(SAXS),while the mechanical properties and formability were analyzed through uniaxial tensile tests and formability tests. The results in-dicate that the mechanical properties of the pre-hardened alloys exhibited negligible changes after experiencing 1-month natural aging(NA).The deviations of ultimate tensile strength(UTS),yield strength(YS),and sheet formability(Erichsen value)are all less than 2%.Also,after different NA time(from 48 h to 1 month)is applied to alloys before pre-hardening treatment, the pre-hardened alloys possess stable microstructure and mechanical properties as well.Interestingly, with the extension of NA time before pre-hardening treatment from 48 h to 1 month, the contribution of NA to the pre-hardening treatment is limited.Only a yield strength increment of 20 MPa is achieved, with no loss in elongation. The limited enhancement is mainly attributed to the fact that only a limited number of clusters are transformed into Guinier-Preston(GP)zones at the early stage of pre-hardening treatment, and the formation ofθ''phase inhibits the nucleation and growth of GP zones as the precipitated phase evolves. 展开更多

Zinc(Zn)is considered a promising biodegradable metal for implant applications due to its appropriate degradability and favorable osteogenesis properties. In this work, laser powder bed fusion(LPBF)additive manufacturing was employed to fabricate pure Zn with a heterogeneous microstructure and exceptional strength-ductility synergy. An optimized processing window of LPBF was established for printing Zn samples with relative densities greater than 99%using a laser power range of 80∼90 W and a scanning speed of 900 mm s−1.The Zn sample printed with a power of 80 W at a speed of 900 mm s−1 exhibited a hierarchical heterogeneous microstructure consisting of millimeter-scale molten pool boundaries,micrometer-scale bimodal grains, and nanometer-scale pre-existing dislocations, due to rapid cooling rates and significant thermal gradients formed in the molten pools. The printed sample exhibited the highest ductility of∼12.1%among all reported LPBF-printed pure Zn to date with appreciable ultimate tensile strength(∼128.7 MPa).Such superior strength-ductility synergy can be attributed to the presence of multiple deformation mechanisms that are primarily governed by heterogeneous deformation-induced hardening resulting from the alternative arrangement of bimodal Zn grains with pre-existing dislocations.Additionally, continuous strain hardening was facilitated through the interactions between deformation twins, grains and dislocations as strain accumulated, further contributing to the superior strength-ductility synergy. These findings provide valuable insights into the deformation behavior and mechanisms underlying exceptional mechanical properties of LPBF-printed Zn and its alloys for implant applications. 展开更多

Mg-6Zn-2X(Fe/Cu/Ni)alloys were prepared through semi-continuous casting, with the aim of identifying a degradable magnesium(Mg)alloy suitable for use in fracturing balls.A comparative analysis was conducted to assess the impacts of adding Cu and Ni,which result in finer grains and the formation of galvanic corrosion sites.Scanner electronic microscopy examination revealed that precipitated phases concentrated at grain boundaries, forming a semi-continuous network structure that facilitated corrosion penetration in Mg-6Zn-2Cu and Mg-6Zn-2Ni alloys.Pitting corrosion was observed in Mg-6Zn-2Fe,while galvanic corrosion was identified as the primary mechanism in Mg-6Zn-2Cu and Mg-6Zn-2Ni alloys.Among the tests, the Mg-6Zn-2Ni alloy exhibited the highest corrosion rate(approximately 932.9 mm/a)due to its significant potential difference.Mechanical testing showed that Mg-6Zn-2Ni alloy possessed suitable ultimate compressive strength, making it a potential candidate material for degradable fracturing balls, effectively addressing the challenges of balancing strength and degradation rate in fracturing applications. 展开更多

Hot torsion tests for AZ80 magnesium alloy were carried out in the temperature range of 380℃-260℃,with a constant decreasing temperature rate of 10℃/s in order to weaken the basal texture and refine the grains. The results indicated that the average grain sizes were refined forming gradient structure with increasing specimen radial position from center(12.2-5.4μm),and that the initial basal texture intensity of the extruded magnesium alloy was weakened from 46.2 to 8.3.Furthermore,the extension twins(ETs)could be disintegrated from the twins forming separated twins with smaller sizes.Interestingly,ETs with the same twin variant intersecting with each other could be coalesced forming grains with similar orientation, while ETs with different twin variants were separated by twins boundaries contributing to grain refinement. Moreover,in addition to the conventional continuous dynamic recrystallized(CDRX)grains with 30˚orientation rotated around C-axis of the parent grains,CDRXed grains with 30˚rotation around a-axis and random rotation axis were also discerned.Besides, the CDRX evolution induced twins were also elaborated, exhibiting the complex competition between CDRX and twining.Hot torsion deformation with constant decreasing temperatures rate is an effective way of grain refinement and texture modification. 展开更多

This work studied the microstructure, mechanical properties and damping properties of Mg_(95.34)Ni_(2)Y_(2.66) and Mg_(95.34)Zn_(1)Ni_(1)Y_(2.66)alloys systematically. The difference in the evolution of the long-period stacked ordered(LPSO)phase in the two alloys during heat treatment was the focus. The morphology of the as-cast Mg_(95.34)Ni_(2)Y_(2.66)presented a disordered network. After heat treatment at 773 K for 2 hours, the eutectic phase was integrated into the matrix, and the LPSO phase maintained the 18R structure. As Zn partially replaced Ni,the crystal grains became rounded in the cast alloy, and lamellar LPSO phases and more solid solution atoms were contained in the matrix after heat treatment of the Mg_(95.34)Zn_(1)Ni_(1)Y_(2.66)alloy.Both Zn and the heat treatment had a significant effect on damping.Obvious dislocation internal friction peaks and grain boundary internal friction peaks were found after temperature-dependent damping of the Mg_(95.34)Ni_(2)Y_(2.66)and Mg_(95.34)Zn_(1)Ni_(1)Y_(2.66)alloys.After heat treatment, the dislocation peak was significantly increased, especially in the alloy Mg_(95.34)Ni_(2)Y_(2).66.The annealed Mg_(95.34)Ni_(2)Y_(2.66)alloy with a rod-shaped LPSO phase exhibited a good damping performance of 0.14 atε=10^(−3),which was due to the difference between the second phase and solid solution atom content. These factors also affected the dynamic modulus of the alloy. The results of this study will help in further development of high-damping magnesium alloys. 展开更多

The fracture toughness of extruded Mg-1Zn-2Y(at.%)alloys,featuring a multimodal microstructure containing fine dynamically recrystallized(DRXed)grains with random crystallographic orientation and coarse-worked grains with a strong fiber texture, was investigated. The DRXed grains comprised randomly oriented equiaxedα-Mg grains. In contrast, the worked grains includedα-Mg and long-period stacking ordered(LPSO)phases that extended in the extrusion direction(ED).Both types displayed a strong texture, aligning the(10.10)direction parallel to the ED.The volume fractions of the DRXed and worked grains were controlled by adjusting the extrusion temperature. In the longitudinal-transverse(L-T)orientation,where the loading direction was aligned parallel to the ED,there was a tendency for the conditional fracture toughness,KQ,tended to increase as the volume fraction of the worked grains increased. However, the KQ values in the T-L orientation, where the loading direction was perpendicular to the ED,decreased with an increase in the volume fraction of the worked grains. This suggests strong anisotropy in the fracture toughness of the specimen with a high volume fraction of the worked grains, relative to the test direction. The worked grains, which included the LPSO phase and were elongated perpendicular to the initial crack plane, suppressed the straight crack extension, causing crack deflection, and generating secondary cracks. Thus, these worked grains significantly contributed to the fracture toughness of the extruded Mg-1Zn-2Y alloys in the L-T orientation. 展开更多

Skin-like electronics research aiming to mimic even surpass human-like specific tactile cognition by operating perception-to-cognition-to-feedback of stimulus to build intelligent cognition systems for certain imperceptible or inappreciable signals was so attractive.Herein,we constructed an all-in-one tri-modal pressure sensing wearable device to address the issue of power supply by integrating multistage microstructured ionic skin(MM i-skin)and thermoelectric self-power staffs, which exhibits high sensitivity simultaneously. The MM i-skin with multi-stage“interlocked”configurations achieved precise recognition of subtle signals, where the sensitivity reached up to 3.95 kPa^(−1),as well as response time of 46 ms,cyclic stability(over 1500 cycles),a wide detection range of 0–200 kPa.Furthermore,we developed the thermoelectricity nanogenerator, piezoelectricity nanogenerator, and piezocapacitive sensing as an integrated tri-modal pressure sensing, denoted as P-iskin,T-iskin,and C-iskin,respectively.This multifunctional ionic skin enables real-time monitoring of weak body signals, rehab guidance, and robotic motion recognition, demonstrating potential for Internet of things(IoT)applications involving the artificial intelligence-motivated sapiential healthcare Internet(SHI)and widely distributed human-machine interaction(HMI). 展开更多

The frost deterioration and deformation of porous rock are commonly investigated under uniform freeze-thaw(FT)conditions.However,the unidirectional FT condition, which is also prevalent in engineering practice, has received limited attention. Therefore,a comparative study on frost deformation and microstructure evolution of porous rock under both uniform and unidirectional FT conditions was performed.Firstly, frost deformation experiments of rock were conducted under cyclic uniform and unidirectional FT action, respectively. Results illustrate that frost deformation of saturated rock exhibits isotropic characteristics under uniform FT cycles, while it shows anisotropic characteristics under unidirectional FT condition with both the frost heaving strain and residual strain along FT direction much higher than those perpendicular to FT direction. Moreover, the peak value and residual value of cumulative frost strain vary as logarithmic functions with cycle number under both uniform and unidirectional FT conditions.Subsequently, the microstructure evolution of rock suffered cyclic uniform and unidirectional FT action were measured.Under uniform FT cycles, newly generated pores uniformly distribute in rock and pore structure of rock remains isotropic in micro scale, and thus the frost deformation shows isotropic characteristics in macro scale.Under unidirectional FT cycles,micro-cracks or pore belts generate with their orientation nearly perpendicular to the FT direction, and rock structure gradually becomes anisotropic in micro scale, resulting in the anisotropic characteristics of frost deformation in macro scale. 展开更多
