The experimental prediction of the mechanical properties of minerals remains difficult because of their small particle size (typically < 2 micrometers). This work aims at examining, the effect of an applied mechanical constraint on the hydration behaviour in the case of Na rich-montmorillonite and its relation with the elastic properties. The mechanical constraint is created, at the laboratory scale, by applying a monoaxial pressure for unstressed host material (i.e. Na rich montmorillonite). The structural analysis before and after stress is achieved using an XRD profile modeling approach. This investigation allowed us to determine several structural parameters related to the nature, abundance, size, position and organization of exchangeable cation and water molecule in the interlamellar space along the c* axis. In order to evaluate the affected elastic properties, the GULP code have been used to study the structure and the interlamellar organization. Indeed, the bulk modulus and elastic constants of montmorilonite have been calculated from first principles within density functional theory (DFT). The obtained Young’s modulus for Na-montmorillonite interlayer varies from 5 GPa to 16 GPa. According to the interlamellar space configuration the calculated elastic constant tensors indicate that the a direction is slightly more flexible than the b direction. The calculated elastic constant tensor along c is much lower than the constants calculated along a and b. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Correcting skeletal class III malocclusion with anterior crossbite in adolescents using only orthodontic treatment poses challenges. This report highlights a novel approach leveraging improved superelastic Ni-Ti alloy wire(ISW)to address these conditions effectively.CASE SUMMARY A 17-year-old male patient presented with the chief complaint of an underbite. The patient was given a diagnosis of skeletal class III malocclusion and anterior crossbite. The orthodontic treatment plan was implemented and did not require teeth extractions or orthognathic surgery.Key interventions involved the app-lication of ISW,intermaxillary elastics, and ISW unilateral multi-bend edgewise archwire. The unique combination of these techniques enabled the correction without the need for extractions or surgery. This approach leverages the advanced biomechanical properties of ISW,including its super-elasticity and shape memory,to enhance treatment efficacy. The treatment lasted 17 months, and major improvements in overjet, overbite, and alignment were achieved. The results were favorable, and stability was discovered during follow-up.CONCLUSION The application of ISW for treating skeletal class III malocclusion with anterior crossbite in a 17-year-old male patient resulted in exceptional outcomes. The treatment led to a marked improvement in the patient’s facial profile and to proper overjet, overbite, and midline alignment. These results were maintained over a one-year follow-up,indicating that a minimally invasive orthodontic approach can effectively address complex skeletal discrepancies in adolescent patients. This case illustrates that with the careful use of advanced orthodontic techniques, major skeletal challenges can be resolved without resorting to surgical procedures. 展开更多

Understanding the mechanical properties of the lithologies is crucial to accurately determine the horizontal stress magnitude. To investigate the correlation between the rock mass properties and maximum horizontal stress, the three-dimensional(3D)stress tensors at 89 measuring points determined using an improved overcoring technique in nine mines in China were adopted,a newly defined characteristic parameter C_(ERP)was proposed as an indicator for evaluating the structural properties of rock masses, and a fuzzy relation matrix was established using the information distribution method. The results indicate that both the vertical stress and horizontal stress exhibit a good linear growth relationship with depth. There is no remarkable correlation between the elastic modulus,Poisson's ratio and depth, and the distribution of data points is scattered and messy. Moreover, there is no obvious relationship between the rock quality designation(RQD)and depth. The maximum horizontal stress σ_(H) is a function of rock properties, showing a certain linear relationship with the C_(ERP)at the same depth. In addition, the overall change trend of σ_(H) determined by the established fuzzy identification method is to increase with the increase of C_(ERP).The fuzzy identification method also demonstrates a relatively detailed local relationship betweenσ_H and C_(ERP),and the predicted curve rises in a fluctuating way, which is in accord well with the measured stress data. 展开更多

It is widely recognized by many within the scientific community that the field of seismology faces challenges in aligning with established scientific practices for studying earthquakes. Some views may suggest a reliance on methods that resemble divination rather than sound scientific inquiry. Despite efforts to understand seismic phenomena over the past three centuries [1], progress in seismology has been perceived as somewhat stagnant. Criticisms have been raised about certain theories, such as Mr. Reid’s Elastic Recoil theory from 1910 [2], and its purported advancements in comprehending seismic processes. While acknowledging various perspectives on this matter [3]-[7], it is important to reflect on the historical context and potential limitations in our understanding. Addressing concerns raised within the discipline involves examining educational practices and fostering a rigorous academic environment to promote scientific excellence. This article aims to explore the underlying factors contributing to the current state of seismology, offering insights into overcoming challenges and fostering advancements that benefit the scientific community and society as a whole. 展开更多

Due to their superior properties, the interest in nanostructures is increasing today in engineering. This study presents a new two-noded curved finite element for analyzing the in-plane static behaviors of curved nanobeams. Opposite to traditional curved finite elements developed by using approximate interpolation functions, the proposed curved finite element is developed by using exact analytical solutions. Although this approach was first introduced for analyzing the mechanical behaviors of macro-scale curved beams by adopting the local theory of elasticity, the exact analytical expressions used in this study were obtained from the solutions of governing equations that were expressed via the differential form of the nonlocal theory of elasticity. Therefore, the effects of shear strain and axial extension included in the analytical formulation are also inherited by the curved finite element developed here. The rigidity matrix and the consistent force vector are developed for a circular finite element. To demonstrate the applicability of the method, static analyses of various curved nanobeams subjected to different boundary conditions and loading scenarios are performed, and the obtained results are compared with the exact analytical ones. The presented study provides an accurate and low computational cost method for researchers to investigate the in-plane static behavior of curved nanobeams. 展开更多

Triaxial testing serves as a fundamental method for evaluating the elastic and strength properties of rocks, crucial for developing accurate 3D geomechanical models. This paper presents a novel method for determining strength parameters by incorporating the dependence of uniaxial compressive strength(UCS)on P-wave velocity into the Hoek-Brown criterion.Additionally,a new approach is introduced to process triaxial test data efficiently using Python libraries such as SciPy,NumPy,Matplotlib, and Pandas.Furthermore, the paper addresses challenges in determining elastic parameters through triaxial testing.A Python script is developed to automate the calculation of elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio,over-coming subjectivity in selecting the linear portion of stress-strain curves. The script optimally identifies the linear region by minimizing the fit error with appropriate constraints, ensuring a more objective and standardized approach. The proposed methodologies are demonstrated using limestone specimens from Central Asian gas fields. These innovations offer faster, more reliable results, reducing error and enhancing the comparability of analyses in geomechanics, with potential applications across various geological settings. 展开更多

In order to study the effects of the contents of used mortar recycled aggregate(OMRA)and brick recycled aggregate(BRA)on the deformation properties of recycled aggregate concrete(RAC),under uniaxial compression conditions,The RAC of OMRA(0%,5%,10%,and 15%)and BRA(0%,3%,6%,9%,12%,and 15%)were studied. The experimental results show that, under uniaxial compression, the interfacial relationships of RAC containing OMRA and BRA between different materials are more complex, and the failure mechanism is also more complex. The content of OMRA and BRA had significant influence on the deformation behavior of RAC.When the content of OMRA and BRA is high,it is difficult for existing formulas and models to accurately represent the actual value. In this study, the influence of OMRA and BRA content is taken into account, and the existing formulas for calculating concrete deformation are modified,so that these formulas can more accurately calculate the elastic modulus, peak strain and ultimate strain of recycled concrete. The stress-strain formula of Guo concrete fits the stress-strain curve of concrete very well.We modified the formula on the basis of Guo formula to make the formula more suitable for the stress-strain curve of recycled concrete containing old mortar and brick, and the theoretical model proposed has better fitting accuracy. The study provides a valuable reference for nonlinear analysis of recycled aggregate concrete structures under different proportions of OMRA and BRA. 展开更多

In order to develop a generic framework capable of designing novel amorphous alloys with selected target properties,a predictor−corrector inverse design scheme(PCIDS)consisting of a predictor module and a corrector module was presented.A high-precision forward prediction model based on deep neural networks was developed to implement these two parts.Of utmost importance, domain knowledge-guided inverse design networks(DKIDNs)and regular inverse design networks(RIDNs)were also developed. The forward prediction model possesses a coefficient of determination(R^(2))of 0.990 for the shear modulus and 0.986 for the bulk modulus on the testing set.Furthermore, the DKIDNs model exhibits superior performance compared to the RIDNs model. It is finally demonstrated that PCIDS can efficiently predict amorphous alloy compositions with the required target properties. 展开更多

Concrete buildings used in cold regions are prone to freeze-thaw damage, leading to internal cracking and surface peeling of the concrete. Therefore, improving the freeze-thaw resistance of concrete is of great significance for the safety of hydraulic engineering. This paper explores the effect of basalt fibers on improving the frost resistance index of concrete through a series of experiments, and analyzes the influencing mechanism. The results show that adding an appropriate amount of basalt fibers can significantly improve the frost resistance of concrete and reduce the freeze-thaw damage phenomenon indicated by concrete specimens. Adding 0.1% basalt fiber can maintain the relative dynamic modulus of concrete specimens at 98% after 150 freeze-thaw cycles, while adding 0.3% basalt fiber can control the quality loss rate of concrete specimens after 150 freeze-thaw cycles at 0.87%. Taking into account both the frost resistance effect and economic factors, it is recommended that the basalt fiber content in frost resistant concrete be 0.1%. The research results can provide reference and guidance for the optimization design of the mix proportion of hydraulic concrete in cold regions. 展开更多

Conductor materials with good mechanical performance as well as high electrical and thermal conductivities are particularly important to break through the current bottle-neck limit(~ 100 T) of pulsed magnets. Here, we perform systematic studies on the elastic properties of the Cu–6wt% Ag alloy wire, which is a promising candidate material for the new-generation pulsed magnets, by employing two independent ultrasonic techniques, i.e., resonant ultrasound spectroscopy(RUS) and ultrasound pulse-echo experiments. Our RUS measurements manifest that the elastic properties of the Cu–6wt% Ag alloy wires can be improved by an electroplastic drawing procedure as compared with the conventional cold drawing. We also take this opportunity to test the availability of our newly-built ultrasound pulse-echo facility at the Wuhan National High Magnetic Field Center(WHMFC, China), and the results suggest that the elastic performance of the electroplastically-drawn Cu–6wt% Ag alloy wire remains excellent without anomalous softening under extreme conditions,e.g., in ultra-high magnetic field up to 50 T and nitrogen or helium cryogenic liquids. 展开更多

The identification of the traction acting on a portion of the surface of an anisotropic solid is very important in structural health monitoring and optimal design of structures. The traction can be determined using inverse methods in which displacement or strain measurements are taken at several points on the body. This paper presents an inverse method based on the method of fundamental solutions for the traction identification problem in two-dimensional anisotropic elasticity. The method of fundamental solutions is an efficient boundary-type meshless method widely used for analyzing various problems. Since the problem is linear, the sensitivity analysis is simply performed by solving the corresponding direct problem several times with different loads. The effects of important parameters such as the number of measurement data, the position of the measurement points, the amount of measurement error, and the type of measurement, i.e., displacement or strain, on the results are also investigated. The results obtained show that the presented inverse method is suitable for the problem of traction identification. It can be concluded from the results that the use of strain measurements in the inverse analysis leads to more accurate results than the use of displacement measurements. It is also found that measurement points closer to the boundary with unknown traction provide more reliable solutions. Additionally, it is found that increasing the number of measurement points increases the accuracy of the inverse solution. However, in cases with a large number of measurement points, further increasing the number of measurement data has little effect on the results. 展开更多

A new suspension gravity compensation system has been developed to alleviate the gravity effects on a two-dimensional(2D)deployable mechanism for ground verification.Considering the rigid-flexible coupling of both the rotating servo and the suspension system,a multi-body dynamic model simulating their integration is established using Lagrange’s equation. To mitigate instantaneous impact forces due to significant non-plumb effects from passive following in the horizontal direction,an elastic element is added in series with the rope in the vertical suspension system. The dynamic response of this elastic element relative to the rotating servo system is analyzed by the ADAMS software.Simulation results show that the compensating error decreases significantly from 45%to 0.31%when incorporating elastic elements compared to scenarios without such elements.Additionally,low-stiffness elastic elements demonstrate a higher compensating error than high-stiffness ones.A spring with a stiffness coefficient of 6 N/mm is selected in the experiment, ensuring that compensating error meets the design specification of 5%. 展开更多

For children less than 5 years old, non-surgical approach is recommended. For pediatric patients 5 - 14 years old, the most common mode of treatment is flexible intramedullary nailing with a known complication of pain at post-op site, inflammatory reaction/bursitis at the entry site, superficial and deep infection, knee synovitis, knee stiffness, leg length discrepancy, proximal nail migration, angulation or malunion, delayed and non-union, implant breakage. This study aims to present a rare complication of a femoral fracture fixed with flexible intramedullary nail. Methodology: We report the outcome of a 12-year-old male with peri implant fracture of the left femur. He underwent removal of plates and screws and subsequently fixed with flexible intramedullary nails. Patient was followed up at 1, 3, 7, and 10 months post-operatively. Varus-valgus, sagittal angulation, and limb shortening were measured pre- and post-operatively. Complications were recorded on each visit. Results: Pre-operative varus angulation was 10˚, pro-curvatum of 55˚ with limb shortening of 4 cm. Postoperatively, varus was maintained to 10˚ but pro-curvatum was corrected to 4˚ and limb shortening was reduced to 1 cm. However, after 1 month the varus angulation increased to 30˚ while maintaining sagittal pro-curvatum. Limb shortening also increased to 2 cm. New bone formation started to appear along the mechanical axis of the left femur which is apparent at 3 months post-op and pro-curvatum increased to 20˚. At 7 and 10 months post-op no signs of union was noted at the fracture site but the callus formation along the mechanical axis gradually matured and appeared as a new femoral shaft. Conclusion: Formation of new bone in response to unstable flexible intramedullary fixation in pediatric femoral shaft fracture is a very rare complication. 展开更多

This paper proposes an efficient strategy for resource utilization in Elastic Optical Networks (EONs) to minimize spectrum fragmentation and reduce connection blocking probability during Routing and Spectrum Allocation (RSA). The proposed method, Dynamic Threshold-Based Routing and Spectrum Allocation with Fragmentation Awareness (DT-RSAF), integrates rerouting and spectrum defragmentation as needed. By leveraging Yen’s shortest path algorithm, DT-RSAF enhances resource utilization while ensuring improved service continuity. A dynamic threshold mechanism enables the algorithm to adapt to varying network conditions, while its fragmentation awareness effectively mitigates spectrum fragmentation. Simulation results on NSFNET and COST 239 topologies demonstrate that DT-RSAF significantly outperforms methods such as K-Shortest Path Routing and Spectrum Allocation (KSP-RSA), Load Balanced and Fragmentation-Aware (LBFA), and the Invasive Weed Optimization-based RSA (IWO-RSA). Under heavy traffic, DT-RSAF reduces the blocking probability by up to 15% and achieves lower Bandwidth Fragmentation Ratios (BFR), ranging from 74% to 75%, compared to 77% - 80% for KSP-RSA, 75% - 77% for LBFA, and approximately 76% for IWO-RSA. DT-RSAF also demonstrated reasonable computation times compared to KSP-RSA, LBFA, and IWO-RSA. On a small-sized network, its computation time was 8710 times faster than that of Integer Linear Programming (ILP) on the same network topology. Additionally, it achieved a similar execution time to LBFA and outperformed IWO-RSA in terms of efficiency. These results highlight DT-RSAF’s capability to maintain large contiguous frequency blocks, making it highly effective for accommodating high-bandwidth requests in EONs while maintaining reasonable execution times. 展开更多

This paper investigates the active traveling wave vibration control of an elastic supported rotating porous aluminium conical shell(CS)under impact loading.Piezoelectric smart materials in the form of micro fiber composites(MFCs)are used as actuators and sensors. To this end,a metal pore truncated CS with MFCs attached to its surface is considered.Adding artificial virtual springs at two edges of the truncated CS achieves various elastic supported boundaries by changing the spring stiffness.Based on the first-order shear deformation theory(FSDT),minimum energy principle, and artificial virtual spring technology, the theoretical formulations considering the electromechanical coupling are derived. The comparison of the natural frequency of the present results with the natural frequencies reported in previous literature evaluates the accuracy of the present approach. To study the vibration control, the integral quadrature method in conjunction with the differential quadrature approximation in the length direction is used to discretize the partial differential dynamical system to form a set of ordinary differential equations. With the aid of the velocity negative feedback method, both the time history and the input control voltage on the actuator are demonstrated to present the effects of velocity feedback gain, pore distribution type,semi-vertex angle, impact loading, and rotational angular velocity on the traveling wave vibration control. 展开更多

To investigate the wind⁃induced vibration re⁃sponse characteristics of multispan double⁃layer cable photo⁃voltaic(PV)support structures, wind tunnel tests using an aeroelastic model were carried out to obtain the wind⁃induced vibration response data of a three⁃span four⁃row double⁃layer cable PV support system. The wind⁃induced vibration characteristics with different PV module tilt angles, wind speeds, and wind direction angles were analyzed. The results showed that the double⁃layer cable large⁃span flexible PV support can effectively control the wind⁃induced vibration response and prevent the occur⁃rence of flutter under strong wind conditions. The maxi⁃mum value of the wind⁃induced vibration displacement of the flexible PV support system occurs in the windward first row.The upstream module has a significant shading effect on the downstream module, with a maximum effect of 23%.The most unfavorable wind direction angles of the structure are 0°and 180°.The change of the wind direction angle in the range of 0°to 30°has little effect on the wind vi⁃bration response. The change in the tilt angle of the PV modules has a greater impact on the wind vibration in the downwind direction and a smaller impact in the upwind di⁃rection.Special attention should be paid to the structural wind⁃resistant design of such systems in the upwind side span. 展开更多
