Spinal cord injury results in paralysis, sensory disturbances, sphincter dysfunction, and multiple systemic secondary conditions, most arising from autonomic dysregulation. All this produces profound negative psychosocial implications for affected people, their families, and their communities;the financial costs can be challenging for their families and health institutions. Treatments aimed at restoring the spinal cord after spinal cord injury, which have been tested in animal models or clinical trials, generally seek to counteract one or more of the secondary mechanisms of injury to limit the extent of the initial damage. Most published works on structural/functional restoration in acute and chronic spinal cord injury stages use a single type of treatment: a drug or trophic factor, transplant of a cell type, and implantation of a biomaterial. Despite the significant benefits reported in animal models, when translating these successful therapeutic strategies to humans, the result in clinical trials has been considered of little relevance because the improvement, when present, is usually insufficient. Until now, most studies designed to promote neuroprotection or regeneration at different stages after spinal cord injury have used single treatments. Considering the occurrence of various secondary mechanisms of injury in the acute and sub-acute phases of spinal cord injury, it is reasonable to speculate that more than one therapeutic agent could be required to promote structural and functional restoration of the damaged spinal cord. Treatments that combine several therapeutic agents, targeting different mechanisms of injury, which, when used as a single therapy, have shown some benefits, allow us to assume that they will have synergistic beneficial effects. Thus, this narrative review article aims to summarize current trends in the use of strategies that combine therapeutic agents administered simultaneously or sequentially, seeking structural and functional restoration of the injured spinal cord. 展开更多

Bangladesh is a deltaic country with a 710 km coastline and numerous newly accreted offshore islands in the central and eastern coastal regions. Natural mangrove forest (the Sundarbans) occupies about 100 km of coastline in the southwest, which protects the lives and properties of the coastal population of that area. The depletion of the forest stock of the Sundarbans was reported in 1875 due to the large-scale clearings by the woodcutters and uncertainty in natural regeneration. The restoration of the Sundarbans in the name of enrichment plantation and assisted natural regeneration was formally introduced in 1959 with Excoecaria agallocha followed by the introduction of mangrove and mainland (non-mangrove) species in the moderate to high saline zone and raised lands in the freshwater zone, respectively in 1975. Chakaria Sundarbans, the second largest natural mangrove forest on the east coast, was highly degraded with the rapid expansion of aquaculture between 1976 and 1989. Tremendous human interferences significantly altered the site condition, interrupting natural recovery. Coastal afforestation was initiated in 1966 with two pioneer mangrove species (Sonneratia apetala and Avicennia officinalis). Some afforested sites require attention for restoration due to natural and manmade causes. Bangladesh Forest Department adopted restoration activities with the technical support of the Bangladesh Forest Research Institute and other agencies. However, all the restoration activities for the Sundarbans, Chakaria Sundarbans, and coastal afforested sites had some success and failure stories. The success and failure of a mangrove restoration activity depends on planning (active or passive restoration), selection of suitable sites and species, planting materials, local community involvement, monitoring, evaluation and plantation management. 展开更多

After the Wenchuan earthquake on May 12, 2008 and the rainstorm and debris flow on August 14, 2010, the vegetation in Hongchun Gully, Yingxiu town is gradually recovering naturally, and the plant community is gradually undergoing community succession. Based on the field vegetation survey data of 46 quadrats in 5 field plots, this study comprehensively analyzed the plant community, species number changes and vegetation characteristics of Hongchun Gully in Yingxiu town at different stages of vegetation succession after the earthquake by using the unified method. The results show that: 1) There are 61 families, 96 genera and 110 species of plants on the Hongchun Gully landslide. Among them, Cunninghamia lanceolata is the most widely distributed, and together with Cryptomeria japonica, it constitutes the main dominant species in the tree layer; The dominant species in shrub layer are Rubussp., Hydrangea strigosa, Rubus tephrodes, etc. The dominant species in herb layer are Artemisia argyi, Stellaria media and Senecio scandens. 2) The vegetation restoration in Hongchun Gully is relatively good, with herbs as the main species in the early stage of succession, shrubs and herbs as the main species in the middle stage of succession and trees as the main species in the late stage of succession; And the longer the succession time, the better the vegetation restoration and the richer the species. 3) Vegetation succession is related to the succession time, and the succession is always in the direction of strong adaptability. The study provides important data reference for further discussing the natural restoration and succession process and mechanism of plant communities on the damaged landslide formed after the earthquake, and provides theoretical basis for vegetation restoration and ecological reconstruction in the hardest hit areas in southwest China after the earthquake. 展开更多

There is evidence that the development of plant communities determines the composition and structure of the orthoptera assemblages. This is the reason for using the orthoptera biodiversity as an indicator of environmental recovery processes in revegetated areas. This research is a part of the monitoring actions included in the Breña’s Compensation Project, linked to the construction of the Breña II damp. It is aimed to assess the biodiversity of the Orthopteran assemblages settled in the restored river copses after nine years following (2007-2016). The results will be interpreted as an indirect measure of the success of the environmental improvement performed. In 2016, two forest farms named “Las Mesas” and “Cerro del Trigo” located in the Sierra de Hornachuelos Natural Park (Córdoba, Southern Iberian Peninsula) were selected for monitoring. These sampling sites were also selected in a previous following phase, which makes comparisons easier and more reliable. At each of these sampling sites, two revegetated enclosures corresponding to the environmental model “restored river copses” and their respective control areas were selected for the study. From the values of the specimen’s number recorded in each sampling plot, the same population indices that in the previous phase (Richness, Abundance, Dominance, Shannon Diversity, and Evenness) were calculated. The diversity profiles using Rényi’s family of uni-parametric diversity indices were also obtained. Differences in the indices were statistically tested by resampling bootstrapping for inferential statistics. Based on our results, the environmental differences between revegetated and control areas have not led to significant changes in the composition and structure of the orthopteran communities they host. In consequence, the environmental restoration carried out in the study area has not been as successful as could be expected and the previous environmental alterations have not been minimized nor have those derived from the environmental rehabilitation itself been compensated. 展开更多

The restoration of European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) population is critical for biodiversity and ecosystem services recovery. This study evaluates the potential of innovative clay substrates, developed and patented by Oyster Heaven, as cost-effective and degradable alternatives for large-scale oyster reef restoration. Field trials conducted in an oyster aquaculture site and hatchery experiments under controlled conditions assessed the larvae settlement efficiency, microbial biofilm composition, and environmental influences. Results showed significantly lower larvae recruitment on clay prototypes and spat collectors used as control, in wild conditions, with environmental factors such as temperature and hypoxia playing a key role. In the hatchery, larvae preferred oyster shells (17,174 ± 659 spats/m2) over clay prototypes (2917 ± 111 spats/m2) and spat collectors (1451 ± 160 spats/m2). Microbial analysis revealed a shift towards Cyanobacteria and Woeseia species, with Pseudoalteromonadaceae, a genus previously linked to both stimulating and inhibiting larvae settlement, detected only on clay surfaces. Despite challenges, the clay prototypes demonstrated potential as sustainable substrates for restoration, particularly in managed “spats-on-reefs” strategies. This research highlights the importance of environmental monitoring, microbial interactions, and substrate optimization in enhancing restoration success for O. edulis populations. Further investigations are recommended to refine clay designs and assess their broader applicability under variable environmental conditions. 展开更多

The current Tanzanian policy guidelines regarding ecological restoration encourage total protection (enclosure system) against grazing activities, fires and wood extraction to allow regeneration in state-based Miombo woodlands. However, there is little evidence on how such treatments would promote restoration. We fetched the pieces of evidence from studies that evaluated the impact of management treatments on the lightly degraded Miombo woodlands at Kitulangalo Forest Reserve in eastern Tanzania. Plot fencing and fire exclusion constrained woody species regeneration due to competition compared to unfenced plots. Adopting quota grazing policies and controlled burning systems can be the shortest and most eco-friendly pathways towards Miombo restoration. The results pointed out that stand disturbances and silvicultural practices can promote regeneration, which is crucial to promoting ecological restoration in Miombo woodlands. 展开更多

The coastal zone ecological restoration project has successfully restored a cumulative shoreline length of 76 km in Fanhe Harbor and Kaozhou Bay ecological restoration shoreline (mangrove forest) located in Huidong County, Huizhou City. Additionally, 5 619.5 m of artificial shoreline has been developed as part of the ecological restoration efforts. Various methods, including UAV remote sensing, orthophoto acquisition, and analysis using ArcGIS software, were employed to assess the length, width, coverage, and other relevant indicators of the newly established ecologically restored shoreline. The findings indicate that the average width, coverage, and ecosystem stability of mangrove forests in the restored area satisfy the criteria for the acceptance of ecological shoreline restoration. Furthermore, a relatively stable ecosystem has been established for over two years. This study offers a scientific foundation for the ecological restoration of mangrove forests and holds considerable significance for the conservation and utilization of mangrove forest resources. 展开更多

Eco-geological vulnerability assessment is a significant research topic within the field of eco-geology,but it remains poorly studied. The Mu Us Sandy Land, located in the central part of the farming-pastoral ecotone in northern China, plays a critical role in maintaining the ecological security pattern in this region. However, this sandy land also faces severe sandy desertification and ecological degradation. This study conducted a regional eco-geological vulnerability assessment of the Mu Us Sandy Land using a comprehensive index evaluation method based on eco-geological theories and survey results. To construct an appropriate index system for the eco-geological vulnerability assessment of the Mu Us Sandy Land, the study considered the sandy land’s unique characteristics and identified 15 factors of five categories, namely geology, meteorology, soil, topography, and vegetation. The paper calculated the comprehensive weights of all the indices using the analytic hierarchy process(AHP)and the entropy weight method(EWM).Furthermore,it established the eco-geological vulnerability index(EGVI)and obtained the assessment results. The results showed that the eco-geological vulnerability of the Mu Us Sandy Land gradually intensifies from east to west, manifested as vulnerable eco-geological conditions overall.Specifically, extremely vulnerable zones are found in the northwestern and southeastern parts of the study area, highly vulnerable zones in the western and southern parts, moderately vulnerable zones in the central part, and slightly and potentially vulnerable zones in the eastern and southern parts.Areas with high spatial autocorrelations include the northern Uxin Banner-Otog Banner-Angsu Town area, the surrounding areas of Hongdunjie Town in the southeastern part of the study area, the Hongshiqiao Township-Xiaohaotu Township area,Otog Front Banner, and Bainijing Town, which should be prioritized in the ecological conservation and restoration.Additionally, the paper proposed suggestions for the ecological conservation and restoration of county-level administrative areas in the study area.Overall, the findings provide a valuable reference for the ecological conservation and restoration of the Mu Us Sandy Land and other desert areas in arid and semi-arid regions. 展开更多

This study focuses on urgent research on restoring and enhancing carbon storage capacity in the Beibu Gulf Urban Agglomer-ation of China,a key area in the‘Belt and Road’Initiative, which aligns with carbon peaking and neutrality goals. This research ana-lyzes the spatial characteristics of carbon metabolism from 2000 to 2020 and uses models to identify stable carbon sink areas, positive carbon flow corridors, and carbon sequestration nodes. The goal is to construct a carbon metabolism spatial security pattern(CMSSP)and propose territorial ecological restoration strategies under different development demand scenarios. The results show the following:1)in 2020,the study area’s carbon sink decreased by 8.29×10^(4) t C/yr compared with that in 2010 and by 10.83×10^(4) t C/yr compared with that in 2000.High-carbon sinks were found mainly in mountainous areas, whereas low-carbon sinks are concentrated in urban con-struction land, rural residential areas, and land margins.2)From 2000 to 2020,the spatial security pattern of carbon metabolism tended to be‘high in the middle of the east and west and low in the gulf.’In 2000,2010,and 2020,16 stable carbon sinks were identified. The carbon energy flow density in Guangxi was greater than that in Guangdong and Hainan, with positive carbon flow corridors located primarily in Guangxi and Guangdong. The number of carbon sequestration nodes remained stable at approximately 15,mainly in Guangxi and Hainan.3)Scenario simulations revealed that under the Nature-based mild restoration scenario, the carbon sink rate will reach 611.85×10^(4) t C/yr by 2030 and increase to 612.45×10^(4) t C/yr by 2060,with stable carbon sinks increasing to 18.In the restora-tion scenario based on Anti-globalization,the carbon sink will decrease from 610.24×10^(4) t C/yr in 2030 to 605.19×10^(4) t C/yr in 2060,with the disappearance of some positive carbon flow corridors and stable carbon sinks.Under the Human-based sustainable restoration scenario, the carbon sink area will decrease from 607.00×10^(4) t C/yr in 2030 to 596.39×10^(4) t C/yr in 2060,with carbon sink areas frag-menting and positive carbon flow corridors becoming less dense.4)On the basis of the current and predicted CMSSPs,this study ex-plores spatial ecological restoration strategies for high-carbon storage areas in bay urban agglomerations at four levels:the land control region, urban agglomeration structure system, carbon sink structure and bay structure control region. 展开更多

Ecosystem degradation is one of the critical constraints for the sustainable development of our planet. However, recovering an ecosystem to a pre-impairment condition is often not practical. The International Restoration Standards provide the first framework for practical guidance on what constitutes the process of ecological repair and how this repair process can be influenced to improve net ecological benefits. In these Standards,Restorative Continuum is highlighted and it recognises that many do not,yet there is still value in aspiring to improvements to the highest extent possible, with some sites potentially being able to be improved in a stepwise manner. Here we elaborate on these Standards by providing a cross-ecosystem theoretical framework of Stepwise Ecological Restoration(STERE)for promoting higher environmental benefits.STERE allows the selection of suitable restorative modes by considering the degree of degradation while encouraging a transition to a higher state. These models include environmental remediation for completely modified and degraded ecosystems, ecological rehabilitation for highly modified and degraded ecosystems, and ecological restoration for degraded native ecosystems.STERE requires selecting tailored restorative modes, setting clear restorative targets and reference ecosystems, applying a systematic-thinking approach, and implementing a continuous monitoring program at all process stages to achieve a resilient trajectory.STERE allows adaptive management in the context of climate change, and when the evidence is available,to“adapt to the future”to ensure climate resilience. The STERE framework could assist in initiating and implementing restoration projects worldwide, especially in developing countries. 展开更多

In the context of high compression rates applied to Joint Photographic Experts Group(JPEG)images through lossy compression techniques,image-blocking artifacts may manifest. This necessitates the restoration of the image to its original quality. The challenge lies in regenerating significantly compressed images into a state in which these become identifiable. Therefore, this study focuses on the restoration of JPEG images subjected to substantial degradation caused by maximum lossy compression using Generative Adversarial Networks(GAN).The generator in this network is based on theU-Net architecture. It features a newhourglass structure that preserves the characteristics of the deep layers. In addition, the network incorporates two loss functions to generate natural and high-quality images:Low Frequency(LF)loss and High Frequency(HF)loss.HF loss uses a pretrained VGG-16 network and is configured using a specific layer that best represents features. This can enhance the performance in the high-frequency region. In contrast,LF loss is used to handle the low-frequency region. The two loss functions facilitate the generation of images by the generator, which can mislead the discriminator while accurately generating high-and low-frequency regions.Consequently,by removing the blocking effects frommaximum lossy compressed images, images inwhich identities could be recognized are generated. This study represents a significant improvement over previous research in terms of the image resolution performance. 展开更多

The rising frequency of extreme disaster events seriously threatens the safe and secure operation of the regional integrated electricity-natural gas system(RIENGS).With the growing level of coupling between electric and natural gas systems,it is critical to enhance the load restoration capability of both systems. This paper proposes a coordinated optimization strategy for resilience-enhanced RIENGS load restoration and repair scheduling and transforms it into a mixed integer second-order cone programming(MISOCP)model. The proposed model considers the distribution network reconfiguration and the coordinated repair strategy between the two systems, minimizing the total system load loss cost and repair time.In addition,a bi-directional gas flow model is used to describe the natural gas system, which can provide the RIENGS with more flexibility for load restoration during natural gas system failure. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed approach is verified by conducting case studies on the test systems RIENGS E13-G7 and RIENGS E123-G20. 展开更多

The Aral Sea was the fourth largest lake in the world but it has shrunk dramatically as a result of irrational human activities, triggering the "Aral Sea ecological crisis". The ecological problems of the Aral Sea have attracted widespread attention, and the alleviation of the Aral Sea ecological crisis has reached a consensus among the five Central Asian countries(Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Turkmenistan). In the past decades, many ecological management measures have been implemented for the ecological restoration of the Aral Sea. However, due to the lack of regional planning and zoning, the results are not ideal. In this study, we mapped the ecological zoning of the Aral Sea from the perspective of ecological restoration based on soil type, soil salinity, surface water, groundwater table, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI), land cover, and aerosol optical depth(AOD) data. Soil salinization and salt dust are the most prominent ecological problems in the Aral Sea. We divided the Aral Sea into 7 first-level ecological restoration subregions(North Aral Sea catchment area in the downstream of the Syr Darya River(Subregion Ⅰ);artificial flood overflow area in the downstream of the Aral Sea(Subregion Ⅱ);physical/chemical remediation area of the salt dust source area in the eastern part of the South Aral Sea(Subregion Ⅲ);physical/chemical remediation area of severe salinization in the central part of the South Aral Sea(Subregion Ⅳ);existing water surface and potential restoration area of the South Aral Sea(Subregion Ⅴ);Aral Sea vegetation natural recovery area(Subregion Ⅵ);and vegetation planting area with slight salinization in the South Aral Sea(Subregion Ⅶ)) and 14 second-level ecological restoration subregions according to the ecological zoning principles. Implementable measures are proposed for each ecological restoration subregion. For Subregion Ⅰ and Subregion Ⅱ with lower elevations, artificial flooding should be carried out to restore the surface of the Aral Sea. Subregion Ⅲ and Subregion Ⅳ have severe salinization, making it difficult for vegetation to grow. In these subregions, it is recommended to cover and pave the areas with green biomatrix coverings and environmentally sustainable bonding materials. In Subregion Ⅴ located in the central and western parts of the South Aral Sea, surface water recharge should be increased to ensure that this subregion can maintain normal water levels. In Subregion Ⅵ and Subregion Ⅶ where natural conditions are suitable for vegetation growth, measures such as afforestation and buffer zones should be implemented to protect vegetation. This study could provide a reference basis for future comprehensive ecological management and restoration of the Aral Sea. 展开更多

Adults requiring total hip arthroplasty(THA)for childhood disorder sequelae present with shortening, limp, pain, and altered gait.THA,which can be particularly challenging due to altered anatomy, requires careful planning, assessment, and computed tomography evaluation.Preoperative templating is essential to establish the appropriate acetabular and femoral size.Information regarding neck length and offset is needed to ensure the proper options are available at THA.Hip centre restoration must be planned preoperatively and achieved intraoperatively with appropriate exposure, identification, and stable fixation with optimum-size components.Identifying the actual acetabular floor is essential as changes include altered anatomy, distortion of the margins and version changes.Proximal femur changes include anatomical variation, decreased canal diameter, cortical thickness, changes in anteversion, and metaphyseal and diaphyseal mismatch.Preoperative assessment should consist of limb assessment for variations due to prior surgical procedures.Evaluation of the shortening pattern with the relationship of the lesser trochanter to the teardrop would help identify and plan for subtrochanteric shortening osteotomy, especially in high-riding hips. The surgical approach must ensure adequate exposure and soft tissue release to achieve restoration of the anatomical hip centre. The femoral components may require modularity to enable restoration of anteversion and optimum fixation. 展开更多

The Faleme River, a West Africa long transboundary stream (625 km) and abundant flow (>1100 million m3) is affected by severe erosion because of mining activities that takes place throughout the riverbed. To preserve this important watercourse and ensure the sustainability of its services, selecting and implementing appropriates restorations techniques is vital. In this context, the purpose of this paper was to present an overview of the actions and techniques that can be implemented for the restoration/rehabilitation of the Faleme. The methodological approach includes field investigation, water sampling, literature review with cases studies and SWOT analysis of the four methods presented: river dredging, constructed wetlands, floating treatment wetlands and chemical precipitation (coagulation and flocculation). The study confirmed the pollution of the river by suspended solids (TSS > 1100 mg/L) and heavy metals such as iron, zinc, aluminium, and arsenic. For the restoration methods, it was illustrated through description of their mode of operation and through some case studies presented, that all the four methods have proven their effectiveness in treating rivers but have differences in their costs, their sustainability (detrimental to living organisms or causing a second pollution) and social acceptance. They also have weaknesses and issues that must be addressed to ensure success of rehabilitation. For the case of the Faleme river, after analysis, floating treatment wetlands are highly recommended for their low cost, good removal efficiency if the vulnerability of the raft and buoyancy to strong waves and flow is under control. 展开更多

Current globalization trends and important breakthroughs globally need a complete study of heavy metal contamination, its causes, its impacts on human and environmental health, and different remediation strategies. Heavy metal pollution is mostly produced by urbanization and industry, which threatens ecosystems and human health. Herein, we discuss a sustainable environmental restoration strategy employing phytoremediation for heavy metal pollution, the carcinogenic, mutagenic, and cytotoxic effects of heavy metals such as cadmium, copper, mercury, selenium, zinc, arsenic, chromium, lead, nickel, and silver, which may be fatal. Phytoremediation, which was prioritized, uses plants to remove, accumulate, and depollute pollutants. This eco-friendly method may safely collect, accumulate, and detoxify toxins using plants, making it popular. This study covers phytostabilization, phytodegradation, rhizodegradation, phytoextraction, phytovolatilization, and rhizofiltration. A phytoremediation process’s efficiency in varied environmental circumstances depends on these components’ complex interplay. This paper also introduces developing phytoremediation approaches including microbe-assisted, chemical-assisted, and organic or bio-char use. These advancements attempt to overcome conventional phytoremediation’s limitations, such as limited suitable plant species, location problems, and sluggish remediation. Current research includes machine learning techniques and computer modeling, biostimulation, genetic engineering, bioaugmentation, and hybrid remediation. These front-line solutions show that phytoremediation research is developing towards transdisciplinary efficiency enhancement. We acknowledge phytoremediation’s promise but also its drawbacks, such as site-specific variables, biomass buildup, and sluggish remediation, as well as ongoing research to address them. In conclusion, heavy metal pollution threatens the ecology and public health and must be reduced. Phytoremediation treats heavy metal pollution in different ways. Over time, phytoremediation systems have developed unique ways that improve efficiency. Despite difficulties like site-specificity, sluggish remediation, and biomass buildup potential, phytoremediation is still a vital tool for environmental sustainability. 展开更多

However, current research comparing the properties of these restorations is lacking. Objectives: The aim of the study was to review the current literature on the properties of screw and cement retained implant supported restorations. Material and Methods: A literature search was conducted from January 2010 to December 2023, using 4 databases to identify research. Sixty studies met the inclusion criteria. Results: Cement-retained restorations have some advantages. Passive fit is easier to achieve, and eliminating occlusal access holes can help with the occlusal adjustments in cemented restorations. However, in case residual cement is not completely removed after cementation, it becomes a predisposing factor for peri-implantitis and marginal bone loss. The main advantage of screw-retained restorations is the retrievability, which can be achieved without damaging the restoration or fixture. However, in case the implant is not ideally positioned, the location of the screw access channel can negatively affect the aesthetics of the screw-retained restorations. In addition, porcelain fracture and screw loosening occur more frequently in screw-retained restoration. Conclusions: Screw and cement-retained restorations display specific advantages and disadvantages;nevertheless, the selection of one retention method over another depends on the clinical scenario. 展开更多

Due to the limitations of a priori knowledge and convolution operation, the existing image restoration techniques cannot be directly applied to the cultural relics mural restoration,in order to more accurately restore the original appearance of the cultural relics mural images,an image restoration based on the denoising diffusion probability model(Denoising Diffusion Probability Model(DDPM))and the Transformer method. The process involves two steps:in the first step, the damaged mural image is firstly utilized as the condition to generate the noise image, using the time, condition and noise image patch as the inputs to the noise prediction network, capturing the global dependencies in the input sequence through the multi-attentionmechanismof the input sequence and feedforward neural network processing, and designing a long skip connection between the shallow and deep layers in the Transformer blocks between the shallow and deep layers using long skip connections to fuse the feature information of global and local outputs to maintain the overall consistency of the restoration results; In the second step, taking the noisy image as a condition to direct the diffusion model to back sample to generate the restored image.Experiment results show that the PSNR and SSIM of the proposedmethod are improved by 2%to 9%and 1%to 3.3%,respectively,which are compared to the comparison methods. This study proposed synthesizes the advantages of the diffusionmodel and deep learningmodel to make themural restoration results more accurate. 展开更多

With 85% of the global oyster reefs destroyed, there is an urgent need for large scale restoration to benefit from the ecosystem services provided by biogenic oyster reefs and their associated biodiversity, including microorganisms that drive marine biogeochemical cycles. This experiment established a baseline for the monitoring of the bacterial and archaeal community associated with wild oysters, using samples from their immediate environment of the Voordelta, with cohabiting Crassostrea gigas and Ostrea edulis, Duikplaats with only C. gigas attached to rocks, and the Dansk Skaldyrcentre, with no onsite oysters. The microbial profiling was carried out through DNA analysis of samples collected from the surfaces of oyster shells and their substrate, the sediment and seawater. Following 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing and bioinformatics, alpha indices implied high species abundance and diversity in sediment but low abundance in seawater. As expected, Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes and Thaumarchaeota dominated the top 20 OTUs. In the Voordelta, OTUs related to Colwellia, Shewanella and Psychrobium differentiated the oysters collected from a reef with those attached to rocks. Duikplaats were distinct for sulfur-oxidizers Sulfurimonas and sulfate-reducers from the Sva 0081 sediment group. Archaea were found mainly in sediments and the oyster associated microbiome, with greater abundance at the reef site, consisting mostly of Thaumarchaeota from the family Nitrosopumilaceae. The oyster free site displayed archaea in sediments only, and algal bloom indicator microorganisms from the Rhodobacteraceae, Flavobacteriaceae family and genus [Polaribacter] huanghezhanensis, in addition to the ascidian symbiotic partner, Synechococcus. This study suggests site specific microbiome shifts, influenced by the presence of oysters and the type of substrate. 展开更多
