In this paper, we combine the advantages of centralized networks and distributed networks approaches for vehicular networks with the aid of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV), and propose a Center-controlled Multihop Wireless(CMW) networking scheme consisting of data transmission plane performed by vehicles and the network control plane implemented by the UAV.Besides, we jointly explore the advantages of Medium Access Control(MAC) protocols in the link layer and routing schemes in the network layer to facilitate the multi-hop data transmission for the ground vehicles.Particularly, the network control plane in the UAV can manage the whole network effectively via fully exploiting the acquired network topology information and traffic requests from each vehicle, and implements various kinds of control based on different traffic demands, which can enhance the networking flexibility and scalability significantly in vehicular networks.Simulation results validate the advantages of the proposed scheme compared with existing methods.展开更多

Hereinto, crashes between cars and pedestrians cause plenty of injuries and even death. Diverting attention from walking to smartphones is one of the main reasons for pedestrians getting injured by vehicles. However, the traditional measures protecting pedestrians from the vehicles heavily rely on the sound warning method, which do not capable for pedestrians focusing on the smartphones. As the smartphones become ubiquitous and intelligent, they have the capacity to provide alert for the pedestrians with the help of vehicle-to-pedestrian (V2P) communication. In this paper, an efficient vehicle-to-X (V2X) communication system is designed for the vehicle and pedestrian communication to guarantee the safety of people. It achieves the IEEE 802.11p and the WiFi protocols meanwhile on the on-board unit (OBU) designed for vehicles. Extensive evaluation shows that the OBU can provide the reliable communication for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and V2P in terms of packet delivery rate and average delay. Furthermore, two safety applications have been developed to protect the safety of vehicles and pedestrians based on the data transferred from the OBU. The first application is designed to show the driving information and provide the collision forewaming alert on the tablet within the vehicle. The second application is developed for the smartphone to provide forewarning alert information to the smartphone-distracted vulnerable pedestrians. Smartphone states are appreciable to provide the adaptive alert modes. Experimental results show that these applications are capable of alerting the intersection accidents, and the pedestrians can get the adaptive alerts according to smartphone usage contexts.展开更多

The proposed design approach can be applied to electric vehicles, and the control framework is categorized into two layers. In the upper layer, the speed of the host vehicle is planned offline, and in the lower layer, the required control variable acceleration is determined. First, the energy optimization problem of electric vehicles passing through an intersection was constructed, and the planning vehicle speed was obtained based on the genetic algorithm(GA). Next, the speed tracking controller and distance tracking controller were designed using sliding mode control(SMC) to ensure that the vehicle can track the planning speed with safe vehicle spacing. Finally, combined with specific cases, the energy-saving effect of the proposed method in the single-vehicle scenario, and the presence of manual driving vehicles in front-and multi-vehicle driving scenarios were studied. The results revealed that the GA-based single-vehicle speed planning method reduced energy consumption by up to 16% compared with the rule-based speed planning method. Furthermore, compared with the intelligent driver model(IDM) and adaptive cruise control(ACC) methods, the GA fleet speed planning method based on V2X communication can reduce average fleet energy consumption by 26% and 24%, respectively, and improve intersection traffic efficiency. The results of the sensitivity analysis of factors affecting planned speed revealed that vehicles passing through intersections at a steady speed exhibited superior economic performance. Finally, hardware-in-the-loop(HIL)testing was performed to verify the effectiveness of the controller under real-time conditions.展开更多
