Since the first version of Pride and Prejudice came into being, Chinese translators have begun to show great interest in translating this novel, and there are more than ten translated Chinese versions now. Scholars have conducted a lot of research about this novel and its various translated versions. Among all these Chinese versions, Wang Keyi' s version is relatively earlier and is also the most popular one. Thus, it attracts many readers' eyes and there are increasing comments and studies on this version. There are also studies analyzing or comparing several versions from the perspective of translator' s subjectivity. While, few articles are published to analyze this version from the three elements of translator' s subjectivity: initiatives, passiveness, and purposiveness. They are also three basic features of translator' s subjectivity, in which translator' s subjectivity reflects. It is also the three features that consist of the translator' s subjectivity. This thesis aims to study Austen's contradictory feminist views through analyzing Mr. Darcy, one of the male characters in Pride and Prejudice. They have long been neglected, but they do have unique individuality and important positions. This thesis also aims to refute both the views mentioned above.展开更多

Particular attention is paid to the replicability of its factor structure and its factorial equivalence across samples of university students from Western Canada (n = 235), Eastern Canada (n = 556) and the mid-Western United States of America (n = 404). Confirmatory factor analysis and invariance analysis were carried out using the Analysis of Moment Structures (AMOS) 7.0. Results showed that while the two-factor structure of the MCPRS was replicated across samples, the original model required refinement to produce acceptable model fit (i.e., each sample had a slightly different model). Partial measurement invariance also was demonstrated for a subset of items on the MCPRS. The implications of the results, in terms of future use of the MCPRS are discussed, and limitations of the current study are outlined.展开更多

This paper analyzes the meanings of three language units from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and their Chinese renderings by seven translators. These three units are recollect, handsome, and come upon the town. By studying the linguistic, situational, or cultural contexts of each language unit, the analysis shows that of the renderings of these three language units, the accuracy rate is three out of seven, one out of seven, and two out of seven respectively. The paper points out that one of the most important causes of the low accuracy rates is that these language units denote old-fashioned meanings. Another cause of the low accuracy rates is that some of the translators are not careful enough in their identification of the meanings of these language units. The paper suggests that in the translation of a classic novel like Pride and Prejudice, translators need to analyze carefully the linguistic, situational, or cultural contexts of a tricky language unit in the novel for very likely it denotes an old-fashioned meaning. Translators could also consult and compare what a tricky language unit means in other places of the novel, use an encyclopedic dictionary instead of a dictionary of contemporary English, and study the notes on tricky words in the novel made by established scholars.展开更多

Through a comparative case study of three Chinese versions of Pride and prejudice, the thesis points out that stress attached to words is often neglected in translation and that a literal rendition of stress runs the risk of changing, deleting the original meaning conveyed or adding meanings unwanted by the character and the novelist. The problem can be solved by employing lexical and syntactic means in translation.展开更多
